Battle Of Metaxades
The Battle of Metaxades was a part of the Greek Civil War and took place in the village of Metaxades, Metaxades, Evros from 15 to 20 May 1949, between the Hellenic Army, Greek Army and the Democratic Army of Greece in the area between the two hills of the village. This battle was the last attempt of the Democratic Army of Greece, Democratic Army to operate outside the fortified groups in Gramos, Grammos and Vitsi. It was the biggest and bloodiest battle in the Evros (regional unit), prefecture of Evros. Battle One week before May 15, 1949, the area surrounding Metaxades was occupied by the guerrillas and as a result, the inhabitants of the villages of Paliouri, Polia, Avdella and Alepochori, Evros, Alepochori had settled in Metaxades. Metaxades
Metaxades ( el, Μεταξάδες, ) is a large village and a former municipality in the Evros regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Didymoteicho, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 211.238 km2. In 2011 its population was 687 for the village, 717 for the community and 3,415 for the municipality. It's a settlement where the popular form of the most characteristic industrial buildings of Thrace was created. These buildings are the koukoulospita (cocoon houses) made for housing families and hosting sericulture as a homemade activity. These residencies did not have any particularities but inside them housing was restricted and the traditional chagiati (roofed balcony) was a big hall with wooden piers. Gramos
Gramos ( sq, Gramoz, Mali i Gramozit; rup, Gramosta, Gramusta; el, Γράμος or Γράμμος) is a mountain range on the border of Albania and Greece. Protokklisi
Protokklisi ( el, Πρωτοκκλήσι meaning the first church, bg, Башклисе) is a village and a community in the central part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. Protoklissi is in the municipal unit of Orfeas. In 2001 its population was 260 for the village and 790 for the community, including the village Agriani. Protokklisi is located about 15 km northwest of Soufli, in the valley of a right tributary of the river Evros. Population History The name of the village during the Ottoman rule was Bashklise (Başkilise in Turkish, Башклисе ''Bašklise'' in Bulgarian). In 1830, it had 100 Bulgarian families, in 1878 and 1912 the village had 105 Bulgarian families. According to professor Lyubomir Miletich, the 1912 population contained 100 Bulgarian families. Alepochori, Evros
Alepochori is a village in the Evros regional unit, East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. The village is considered very old and its inhabitants are native Greeks. Geographical data The village is located right on the Greek-Bulgarian border (300 m from the last houses). The village was recognized as a community in 1929, coming from the community of Metaxades, while in 1956 the settlement of Polia was annexed to it. In 1997, the community was not recognized anymore and was annexed to the Municipality of Metaxades. Since 2010 and till today, it is a municipal district of the Municipality of Didymoteicho. Evros ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Έβρου) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. Its name is derived from the river Evros, which appears to have been a Thracian hydronym. Evros is the northernmost regional unit. Vitsi ( el, Βίτσι) is a former municipality in Kastoria regional unit, West Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Kastoria, of which it is a municipal unit. It takes its name from Mount Vitsi which is the highest point within the municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 135.028 km2. The population is 1,275 (2011). It includes the villages of Sidirochori (Σιδηροχώρι), Foteini (Φωτεινή), Metamorfosi (Μεταμόρφωση), Toichio (Τοιχιό), Vyssinia (Βυσσινιά), Oxya (Οξυά), Polykerasos (Πολυκέρασος) and Poimeniko (Ποιμενικό).
