Battle Of Kroya
The Battle of Kroyo was an engagement of the Java War which took place on 1 October 1828 near the village of Kroyo in Purworejo, in modern Central Java. A Dutch column, pursuing a small group of Javanese rebels, encountered a much larger force than they had expected, and was destroyed in a later ambush. Prelude In 1828, the Dutch intensified their construction of fortifications to deny rebel forces in the Java War territorial control. To defeat Diponegoro's army, Dutch command under Hendrik Merkus de Kock deployed eight mobile columns with a strength of around 500 men each. One of these columns, commanded by Major Buschkens, operated in the vicinity of the west of Yogyakarta. Java War
The Java War (; ; ), also known in Indonesia as the Diponegoro War (; ), was an armed conflict in central and eastern Java from 1825 to 1830, between native Javanese rebels headed by Prince Diponegoro and the Dutch East Indies supported by Javanese princely states. It is considered a watershed in Javanese history, culture, and society. During the early nineteenth century, declining Dutch power along with increased centralization of colonial authorities through brief French and British controls had changed the political order established after the 1755 Treaty of Giyanti, at the expense of the native Javanese princely states. Yogyakarta Sultanate
The Sultanate of Yogyakarta, officially the Sultanate of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat ( ; ), is a Javanese monarchy in Yogyakarta Special Region, in the Republic of Indonesia. The current head of the sultanate is Hamengkubuwono X. Yogyakarta existed as a state since 1755 on the territory of modern Indonesia in the central part of Java Island. The sultanate became the main theatre of military operations during the Java War of 1825–1830, following which a significant part of its territory was annexed by the Dutch, and the degree of autonomy was significantly curtailed. Hendrik Merkus De Kock
Hendrik Merkus, Baron de Kock (25 May 1779 – 12 April 1845) was a Dutch military officer, colonial administrator and politician who served as lieutenant governor-general of the Dutch East Indies from 1826 to 1830. He also served as Minister of the Interior from 1836 to 1841. Life Hendrik Merkus de Kock was born on 25 May 1779 in Heusden, Dutch Republic. His father was Jean Conrad de Kock, a banker who was guillotined in Paris, and his mother was Maria Petronella Merkus. In 1801, he joined the Batavian Navy, and by 1807 was posted to the Dutch East Indies. In 1821 he commanded a military expedition to Palembang to suppress a local uprising. Later, as Lieutenant Governor-General (1826–1830), De Kock led the fight against Prince Diponegoro in the Java War.
