The Battle of Dongshan (Chinese :東山海戰 ), also known as the Battle of August Sixth (Chinese: 八六海戰), was a naval battle fought between the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China on 6 August 1965. Background In 1963, after China experienced difficulties from the Great Leap Forward and the Great Chinese Famine, the Ministry of National Defense (Republic of China), ROC Defense Ministry took the opportunity to create a plan to retake the mainland known as Project National Glory. Project National Glory () or Project ''Guoguang'' was a planned attempt by the Republic of China (ROC), Government of Republic of China, whose government had retreat of the government of the Republic of China to Taiwan, retreated to Taiwan after losing the Chinese Civil War, to reconquer mainland China from the People's Republic of China (PRC) by large scale amphibious invasion. It was the most elaborate of the ROCs plans or studies to invade the mainland after 1949. The Southern Theater Command Navy (STCN), or the South Sea Fleet (SSF) until 2018, is a formation of China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and the naval component of the Southern Theater Command.
