The Battle of Chester Station was fought on May 10, 1864, between Union Army, Union and Confederate States Army, Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The Confederates attacked portions of Benjamin Butler (politician), Benjamin Butler's Union forces. Background The Action at Chester Station was a relatively minor battle of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign and ended indecisively. It started as a Union expedition against the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad, Richmond & Petersburg Railroad. The object was to destroy the railroad in order to cut the line of communication. 67th Ohio Infantry
The 67th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 67th Ohio Infantry Regiment was organized by consolidation of recruits for the 67th Ohio Infantry and 45th Ohio Infantry and mustered in for three years service under the command of Colonel Otto. The regiment was initially armed with outdated Prussian Potsdam muskets, an unpopular weapon that the soldiers considered more dangerous to the shooter than the person being shot at, aside from the flank companies which had Enfield rifles (the Potsdam muskets were replaced with Springfield rifles later that year). Colonel Burstenbinder was even less popular, being described in regimental histories as "an imbecile, imposter, and knave detested by all". Alfred Howe Terry (November 10, 1827 – December 16, 1890) was a Union general in the American Civil War and the military commander of the Dakota Territory from 1866 to 1869, and again from 1872 to 1886. The 38th Virginia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the War Between the States. It fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia. The 38th Virginia was organized in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in June 1861. Its members were recruited in Pittsylvania, Halifax, and Mecklenburg counties. It served under the command of Generals Early, Garland, Armistead, Barton, and Stuart. Seth Maxwell Barton (September 8, 1829 – April 11, 1900) was a United States Army officer and, then, a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He later became noted as a chemist.
