The Philippines have dominated the men's events since the sport was played, winning 19 of the 22 events. Malaysia won 13 of the 21 women's events. Starting in 2019, the 3x3 version of the game was played, in addition to the usual 5-on-5 full strength teams. The Philippines men's national basketball team (), commonly known as Gilas Pilipinas, is the basketball team representing the Philippines. Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball (approximately in diameter) through the defender's hoop (a basket in diameter mounted high to a backboard at each end of the court), while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. Basketball At The 2007 Southeast Asian Games
The 2007 SEA Games basketball tournaments was held at Keelapirom Stadium, Suranaree University of Technology at Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. The basketball events were not held on the 2005 SEA Games since the host country, the Philippines basketball federation (the Basketball Association of the Philippines) was suspended by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The suspension was lifted in 2006 and the Philippines and Malaysia defended their men's and women's championships, respectively, last won in 2003. The tournament was conducted on a single round robin; the team with best record wins the gold. The men's team of the Philippines maintained their superiority in the SEA Games, winning all of their games with an average lead of 42 points; the women's team of Malaysia easily dispatched their opponents in the first two games before upending the Thais in overtime to successfully defend their gold. Basketball at the 2003 SEA Games was held from 7 to 13 December 2003 in Army Sports Gymnasium, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This edition featured both tournaments for men's and women's team. The Philippines team swept all of their assignments en route to their 13th overall men's title and seventh consecutive since the 1991 Games, while Malaysia, although they lost their final game against Thailand on the final day of the tournament, still managed to annex their third straight women's title since the 1997 edition, and their 10th title overall. Basketball at the 2001 SEA Games was held from 9 to 16 September 2001 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This edition featured both tournaments for men's and women's team. All matches were held in Malaysia Basketball Association Stadium. The Philippines swept all of their assignments en route to their 12th overall men's title and sixth consecutive since the 1991 Games. Incidentally on the same venue was the last time the defending champions relinquished their SEA Games basketball, bowing to the hosts on the 1989 Southeast Asian Games. Meanwhile, Malaysia managed to defend the title they won since the 1997 edition, their second straight and their tenth overall women's title by edging Thailand in a nailbiter, 71–70.
