Barnwood
Barnwood is a suburb and former civil parish in the city of Gloucester, in the county of Gloucestershire, England. It lies about east of the centre of the city. Barnwood was originally a small village on the Roman roads in Britannia, Roman road that links Gloucester with Hucclecote, Brockworth and Cirencester. The Church of England parish church is dedicated to St Lawrence. Economy The Generation Design and Construction Division of the Central Electricity Generating Board, CEGB became the centre of a new office development when it moved here in the early 1970s. This then became the corporate headquarters of Nuclear Electric, and later the English offices of the (nominally Scottish-based) British Energy, which in 2009 became part of EDF Energy. Other major companies in Barnwood include Claranet, Cheltenham & Gloucester, Unilever Gloucester (ice cream) and InterCall. Barnwood House Hospital
Barnwood House Hospital was a private mental hospital in Barnwood, Gloucester, England. It was founded by the Gloucester Asylum Trust in 1860 as Barnwood House Institution and later became known as Barnwood House Hospital.Gloucester: Hospitals ''A History of the County of Gloucestershire'': volume 4: The City of Gloucester (1988), pp. 269-275. Barnwood Park School
Barnwood Park School is a coeducational secondary school located in the Barnwood area of Gloucester in the English county of Gloucestershire. It was originally known as Barnwood Park High School for Girls, but was then awarded specialist status as an Arts College the school was renamed Barnwood Park Arts College. The school achieved the Artsmark Gold from the Arts Council of England in 2009. From September 2018 the school became coeducational and was renamed Barnwood Park School. Today it is a foundation school administered by Gloucestershire County Council. Barnwood Park School offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils. Unilever Gloucester is a large food manufacturing site in the south west of England Gloucester, England, that produces all of the makes of Unilever ice cream for the UK. History Construction The site was built by Unilever from 1959. The site was officially announced on Tuesday 16 April 1962. No ice cream was made by the company during the war. In March 1958 Unilever had approached Gloucester Corporation for a site of 20-30 acres, to employ around 400-500 people. Construction began February 1959. Previously Unilever made ice cream in Edinburgh, Godley, Greater Manchester, and London, but could not keep up. A cold store next door, with the area of a football pitch, would hold 750,000 gallons of ice cream, at the time that would be worth £1m. Hucclecote
Hucclecote is a suburb in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, comprising a ward (population 8,826) in the City of Gloucester. It is located on the periphery of the city, between Barnwood and Brockworth, along Ermin Way, an old Roman road connecting Gloucester with Cirencester and the Cotswolds. History and background Hucclecote has been settled since ancient times, and a Roman villa dating from the second or third century AD has been found at Hucclecote. Central Electricity Generating Board
The Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) was responsible for electricity generation, transmission and bulk sales in England and Wales from 1958 until privatisation of the electricity industry in the 1990s. It was established on 1 January 1958 to assume the functions of the Central Electricity Authority (1955–1957), which had in turn replaced the British Electricity Authority (1948–1955).
