Bamberger's was a department store chain with branches primarily in New Jersey and other locations in Delaware, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania. The chain was headquartered in Newark, New Jersey. History 19th century Newark was known for manufacturing in the last half of the 19th century. By 1892, Newark was the fourth largest American city and it manufactured products from leather to jewelry along with it being a rail hub. It also had a large Jewish population. It was these factors that led Felix Fuld, Louis M. Frank, and Louis Bamberger to found the store on Dec 13, 1892 on Market Street on the corner of Halsey Street in Newark, New Jersey, taking over the location of a bankrupt store Hill & Craig. 165 Halsey Street, formerly known as the Bamberger Building, is a 14-story, office tower in Downtown Newark, New Jersey. Built in 1912–1929, it was designed by Jarvis Hunt. Felix Fuld
Felix Fuld (19 July 1868 – 20 January 1929) built one of America's well-known department stores – L. Bamberger & Company with his partner, Louis Bamberger. He was an early 20th century philanthropist contributing to many local, regional, and international organizations. He arrived in Newark, New Jersey in 1892 and soon thereafter established the department store with Louis Bamberger and Louis Frank. Felix Fuld married his business partner's sister, Caroline Bamberger Fuld who carried on his charitable work after his death at age 60, including the establishment of the Institute for Advanced Study. Louis Bamberger
Louis Bamberger (15 May 1855 – 11 March 1944) was a citizen of Newark, New Jersey, from the early 1900s until his death in 1944. He and his sister Caroline Bamberger Fuld co-founded the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He was a businessman and philanthropist and at his death all flags in Newark were flown at half-staff for three days, and his large department store closed for a day. Early life Louis Bamberger was born in 1855 to a German Jewish family in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Theresa (née Hutzler) and Elkan Bamberger. His mother belonged to the family that ran Hutzler Brothers in Baltimore. His grandfather was Moses Hutzler. Jarvis Hunt
Jarvis Hunt (August 6, 1863 – June 15, 1941) was a Chicago architect who designed a wide array of buildings, including railroad stations, suburban estates, industrial buildings, clubhouses and other structures. Biography Hunt was born in Weathersfield, Vermont, and attended Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He had a passion for golf and qualified for the 1904 Olympics Golf Team, but failed to make the cut. Hunt later designed the clubhouses of several clubs, including the National Golf Links of America Golf Course, of which he was a founding member, and the Chicago Golf Club. Most of his projects are associated with the United States Midwest, including the Kansas City Union Station and the Joliet Union Station.
