Balkan Mole
The Balkan mole (''Talpa stankovici'') is a species of mammal in the family Talpidae. Taxonomy It was first described in 1931 as a subspecies of '' T. romana''. It has two subspecies, ''T. s. stankovici'' (found in Macedonia and Greece) and ''T. s. montenegrina'' (found in Montenegro and Albania). Genetic analysis found that, despite the morphological similarities between ''T. stankovici'' and ''T. romana'', ''T. stankovici'' is most closely related to '' T. levantis''. Description Males are with a tail; females are slightly smaller. Males weigh , and weight about 20% more than females. The Balkan mole has black fur and grey feet. Habitat and ecology It feeds primarily on earthworms. Females give birth to 2-4 young in February and early March. Talpidae
The family (biology), family Talpidae () includes the true Mole (animal), moles (as well as the shrew moles and desmans) who are small insectivore, insectivorous mammals of the order (biology), order Eulipotyphla. Talpids are all fossorial, digging animals to various degrees: moles are completely subterranean animals; shrew moles and shrew-like moles somewhat less so; and desmans, while basically aquatic, excavate dry sleeping chambers; whilst the quite unique star-nosed mole is equally adept in the water and underground. Talpa Romana
The Roman mole (''Talpa romana'') is a species of mammal in the family Talpidae. It is endemic to central-southern Italy (from the province of Grosseto to the province of Ancona, south to southern Calabria). It was last recorded on Sicily in 1885. There is also an unconfirmed report about an isolated subpopulation in the Vars region of southern France. The Levant mole (''Talpa levantis'') is a species of mammal in the family Talpidae. Taxonomy and evolution The Levant mole was first described as a subspecies of '' Talpa caeca'' by Oldfield Thomas in 1906, and recognized as a full species in 1973 by Spitzenberg.
