Balgay F.C.
Balgay Football Club was an association football club from Balgay, a suburb of Dundee, Scotland. History Although the club claimed a formation date of 1880, it was actually founded in December 1881. After a successful half-season, in which the club won 10 of its 16 matches, the club turned senior by joining the Scottish Football Association. This entitled the club to enter the 1882–83 Scottish Cup. In the first round, Balgay won 1–0 at Angus of Forfar, a second Balgay goal not being allowed as the goalposts had been knocked down in the struggle around the ball. In the second the club went down 5–3 at Our Boys. Towards the end of the season, Balgay was one of the founder members of the Forfarshire Football Association, Kidd of Balgay being elected to the committee. Forfarshire Cup
The Forfarshire Cup is a football competition in Scotland competed for by teams in the Forfarshire Football Association from Angus, Dundee and Perth. The name of the competition is often baffling to some, as "Forfarshire" is an archaic and anglicised name for Angus which became official in the late 19th century around the time of Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889 which restructured and renamed many of Scotland's counties, however the name quickly fell into disuse and was very rarely used in everyday conversation and non existent today. The Forfarshire Football Association was founded in 1883 and comprised eighteen clubs. Twelve from Dundee, two from Arbroath and one each from Broughty Ferry and Lochee (both independent of Dundee at the time), Coupar Angus and Montrose. Balgay ( Gaelic: ''Baile (na) Gaoithe'') is a suburb in the west end of Dundee, Scotland. The name, derived from Gaelic, seems to mean '' 'stead of the marsh/wind' ''.Nicolaisen, W.F.H. ''Scottish Place Names'' pp139 During the 17th century, Balgay House was built and now this has become incorporated into Royal Victoria Hospital. Balgay Hill and Victoria Park were acquired by Dundee City Corporation in 1870 as public parks. The Mills Observatory designed by James MacLellan Brown was added in 1935 at the summit of the 143m hill. It is the only full-time public observatory in UK. Lochee Park is situated east of Balgay and has a perimeter of 1½ miles (approx). The park annually hosts firework displays to celebrate Bonfire Night in conjunction with Radio Tay roadshow. The 1883–84 Scottish Cup was the 11th season of Scotland's most prestigious football knockout competition. Queen's Park won the competition for the seventh time after Vale of Leven could not field a team on the date fixed for the final due to player illness.
