The Bahrain Writers Association ( ar, أسرة الأدباء والكتاب في البحرين) is a Bahraini professional association for writers. It was established in 1969 and is headquartered in the Zinj neighborhood of Manama. Committed to social mobility, their motto is “Words for Humanity.” The organization is an associate member of the Arab Writers Union and the Afro-Asian Writers Association. Manama ( ar, المنامة ', Bahrani pronunciation: ) is the capital and largest city of Bahrain, with an approximate population of 200,000 people as of 2020. Arab Writers Union
The Arab Writers Union (ar.: اتحاد الكتاب العرب) is an association of Arab writers, founded in 1969, in Damascus, Syria, at the initiative of a group of Arab writers including Syrian novelist Hanna Mina. In 2008, the union was moved from Damascus to Cairo and in 2015 to Abu Dhabi. Its current president is Dr. Muhammad Al-Hourani. In 2010, the Union published a list of the "100 Best Arabic novels," although the list in fact contained 105 entries. It ranked Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz's ''Cairo Trilogy'' as the best Arabic-language novel, followed by ''In Search of Walid Masoud'' by Jabra Ibrahim Jabra and ''Honor'' by Sonallah Ibrahim. Zinj, Bahrain
Zinj () is a suburb in the city of Manama, Bahrain. Etymology The general belief amongst Bahraini scholars is that the reason why the suburb literally translates to "negros" or "blackamoors", is because it pertains to the African slaves who were sold there. Some foreign scholars disagree and claim that it is named after the Zanj Rebellion against the Abbasid caliphate in the 9th century. Geography Zinj lies in the southern part of Manama and lies adjacent to the Shaikh Isa Bin Salman highway which eventually leads to the King Fahd Causeway to neighbouring Saudi Arabia. Zinj is included in the country's planned national light railway network. The suburb is divided into two sections: New Zinj and Old Zinj. ''Akhbar Al Khaleej'' (in Arabic أخبار الخليج meaning ''The Gulf News'') is a Bahraini daily publication. It is the sister paper of the English-language daily, ''Gulf Daily News''. History and profile The first issue of ''Akhbar Al Khaleej'' was published on 1 February 1976. It is one of the Bahrain's oldest daily papers. The first editor-in-chief and founder was Mahmood Al Mardi and its staff composed of mainly Egyptian, Sudanese, and Bahraini journalists. Mohammed Jaber Al-Ansari
Mohammed Jaber Al-Ansari, is a prominent Bahraini philosopher and political thinker, and an influential proponent of rational thinking in the 20th-century Arab World. He played a pivotal role in establishing the previously peripheral Persian Gulf region as an integral contributor to modern Arabic thought, on equal footing with other parts of the Arab World. His early work as a literary historian, and critic, instigated wide literary activity in his native Bahrain and in its surrounding Persian Gulf region. Hamda Khamis
Hamda (or Hamdah) Khamis is a poet and a freelance columnist from Bahrain. Biography Khamis was born in Bahrain in 1945. In 1969, she published her first collection "Shayaza" (translates into 'Shrapnel' in English), thus becoming the first woman to emerge into the Bahraini poetry scene. Many other Bahraini female poets followed after her, and helped create Bahrain's thriving literary scene. Alawi Al-Hashimi
Alawi al-Hashimi ( ar, علوي الهاشمي, born September 1948) is a Bahraini poet and university professor. He was born and raised in the capital, Manamma, in a large Hasina family. He obtained a Diploma in Commerce from the University of London in 1968, a Bachelor of Arts in the Arabic language from Beirut Arab University in 1972, a Master of Arts in Arabic literature from Cairo University in 1978, and a PhD in Arabic literature from Tunis University in 1986. He has taught at the College of Arts of the University of Bahrain and served as culture editor for the ''Gulf News'' and the literary section of ''Bahrain Magazine''.
