Badwater Basin
Badwater Basin is an endorheic basin in Death Valley National Park, Death Valley, Inyo County, California, noted as the lowest point in North America and the United States, with a depth of below sea level. Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States, is only to the northwest. The site itself consists of a small spring-fed pool of "bad water" next to the road in a sink; the accumulated salts of the surrounding basin make it undrinkable, thus giving it the name. The pool does have animal and plant life, including pickleweed, aquatic insects, and the Badwater snail. Badwater Crater, the lowest place on the planet Mars, is named after the basin due to their similarities. Adjacent to the pool, where water is not always present at the surface, repeated freeze–thaw and evaporation cycles gradually push the thin salt crust into hexagonal shapes. The pool is not the lowest point of the basin: the lowest point (which is only slightly lower) is sever ... Badwater Ultramarathon
The Badwater Ultramarathon is a ultramarathon race starting at below sea level in the Badwater Basin, in California's Death Valley, and ending at an elevation of at Whitney Portal, the trailhead to Mount Whitney. It takes place annually in mid-July when the weather is the most extreme and temperatures can reach during the day at Badwater Basin. Course Originally, the run was conceived as being between the lowest and the highest points in the contiguous United States: Badwater, Death Valley and Mt. Whitney's summit . The two are only apart on the map, but the land route between the two points is substantially longer, , because of detours around lake beds and over mountain ranges. Additionally, since the finish line is from the nearest trailhead, anyone who competes over the race distance must be capable of a total physical effort of . Due to the two mountain ranges that must be crossed between Badwater and Whitney, the course's cumulative elevation gain exceeds . Becau ...
