Bad Girls (art Exhibition)
''Bad Girls'' was a 1994 exhibition curated by Marcia Tucker. The show opened at the New Museum, in New York City, January 14, 1994. It was presented in two parts, part 1 lasting from January 14 to 27, 1994, and part 2 from March 5 to April 10, 1994. ''Bad Girls'' was a humorous and transgressive look at gender and feminist issues. It featured work from artist across many media, including photo, painting, sculpture, performance, film, comics, advertisements, writings and more. The show was accompanied by film screenings, performances, and events. The exhibition had mixed reviews at the time and has continued to vex many critics, however, it is now seen as a crucial piece in a lineage of third-wave feminist exhibitions. Sue Williams is an American artist born in 1954. She came to prominence in the early 1980s, with works that echoed and argued with the dominant postmodern feminist aesthetic of the time. Alina Troyano, more commonly known as Carmelita Tropicana, is a Cuban-American stage and film lesbian actress who lives and works in New York City. Coreen Simpson (born February 18, 1942) is a noted African-American photographer and jewelry designer, whose work has an African-American theme. Beverly Semmes
Beverly Semmes (born 1958) is an American artist based in New York City who works in sculpture, textile, video, photography, performance, and large-scale installation. She studied at the Boston Museum School, Tufts University, and at the Yale University School of Art. During her graduate studies she experimented with heavy wire sculptures and with artificial objects rendered as natural ones, such as trees made of steel with painted-on leaves, which she ultimately placed in natural settings. Semmes is now best known for her large-scale sculpture and installations, which often explore the relationship between craft and fine art while simultaneously dealing with issues related to feminism, gender roles and womanhood.
