Award For Heroism
The Award for Heroism is an award of the United States Department of State. It is presented to employees of State, USAID and Marine Security Guard, Marine guards assigned to diplomatic and consular facilities in recognition of acts of courage or outstanding performance under unusually difficult or dangerous circumstances, whether or not in connection with the performance of assigned duties. The award consists of a silver medal set and a certificate signed by an assistant secretary, an official of equivalent rank or the Chief of mission, Chief of Mission. Due to the location and dangerous nature of their work, the majority of the recipients have been Foreign Service Special Agents of the Diplomatic Security Service. The Award for Heroism is a replacement for the former State Department Award for Valor, Award for Valor. Tet Offensive Attack On US Embassy
The Tet offensive attack on the United States embassy took place on the early morning of 31 January 1968, when a 19-man Viet Cong (VC) sapper team attempted to seize the US Embassy in Saigon at the start of the VC's Tet Offensive. While the VC successfully penetrated the embassy compound, they were unable to enter the chancery building and were pinned down by security forces, with the lone survivor eventually surrendering to US forces. Notwithstanding the attack's failure it had a profound political and psychological impact in the United States. The Viet Cong (VC) was an epithet and umbrella term to refer to the Communism, communist-driven armed movement and united front organization in South Vietnam. Embassy Of The United States, Saigon
The United States Embassy in Saigon was first established in June 1952, and moved into a new building in 1967 and eventually closed in 1975. The embassy was the scene of a number of significant events of the Vietnam War, most notably the Viet Cong attack during the Tet Offensive which helped turn American public opinion against the war, and the helicopter evacuation during the Fall of Saigon after which the embassy closed permanently. George Jacobson
Colonel George D. Jacobson (6 September 191218 May 1989) was a United States Army officer who served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Early life He was born in Milwaukee on 6 September 1912 and worked as a professional magician. Career He joined the Army in 1941 and attended Officer Candidates School receiving his commission in 1942.
