The men's 200 metre backstroke event at the 2004 Olympic Games was contested at the Olympic Aquatic Centre of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, Greece on August 18 and 19. There were 36 competitors from 30 nations. Each nation had been limited to two swimmers in the event since 1984. U.S. swimmer Aaron Peirsol won a gold medal in this event, with an Olympic record time of 1:54.95. Markus Rogan, silver medalist in the 100 metre backstroke, added another silver for Austria in the same stroke, in an outstanding time of 1:57.35. Romania's Răzvan Florea, who finished behind Rogan by 0.21 of a second, earned a bronze in 1:57.56. Peirsol became the fifth swimmer and fourth American in Olympic history to claim titles in two backstroke events. Roland Schwartzl (born 10 December 1980 in Lienz) is a decathlon, decathlete from Austria. He has won 5 pole vault and 3 heptathlon tiles since 1999 in the Austrian Indoor Championships. He also won both the decathlon and long jump in the Austrian Championships in 2003. His greatest achievement as a junior came in the 1999 European Athletics Junior Championships, 1999 European Junior Championships where he won the decathlon. Günther Weidlinger (born April 5, 1978 in Braunau am Inn) is an Austrian long-distance runner who is a former 3000 metres steeplechase specialist but now competes in the marathon. He first made his mark in athletics as a junior athlete in European competitions: winning the steeplechase at the 1997 European Athletics Junior Championships and a silver medal at the 1997 European Cross Country Championships. He set a national record in the event in the final of the 1999 World Championships in Athletics and also reached the final at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He reached a number of major championship finals over the following five years and represented Austria at the 2004 Athens Olympics, as well as the 2003 and 2005 World Championships. Michael Buchleitner
Michael Buchleitner (born 14 October 1969 in Mödling) is an Austrian long-distance runner. Up to 1999 he specialized in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He finished tenth at the 1993 World Championships and competed without reaching the final in 1997 and 1999. He did, however, achieve a personal best time of 8:20.04 minutes at the latter event. Competing at the Universiade he won a gold medal in 1993 and a bronze in 1997. He also finished fifth in 3000 metres at the 2002 European Indoor Athletics Championships. From 2000 he has concentrated on the marathon race. He competed in this event at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics. He married Ellen Kiessling, a German champion middle-distance runner, in 1994.
