Australian rules football in South Africa is a team sport played at amateur level in South Africa, the country with a small audience. The governing body is AFL South Africa. Earliest recollections in South Africa indicate that Australian rules football was first introduced to the colonies of Transvaal Colony, Transvaal, Colony of Natal, Natal and Cape Colony, Cape in the 1880s with a premiership competition and intercolonial matches operating from 1896. By 1904, it had become one of the most popular codes of football in those colonies, however it soon faded with the success of the 1906–07 South Africa rugby union tour of Europe and with a lack of support from Australia, the game died out just prior to the Union of South Africa. The Brisbane Lions are a professional Australian rules football in Australia, Australian rules football club based in Brisbane, Queensland, that compete in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's elite competition. Walter Charles Moore (24 September 1875 – 12 May 1901) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Albert Park Football Club (VFA), Albert Park and Sydney Swans, South Melbourne in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and for Essendon Football Club, Essendon in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). Stanley Spencer Reid (12 July 1872 – 29 June 1901) was an Australian rules footballer with the Fitzroy Football Club from 1894 to 1898. Soon after his retirement from VFL football, he became an ordained minister of the Presbyterianism, Presbyterian Church. Auskick is a program designed to teach the basic skills of Australian football to children aged between 5 and 12. Auskick is a non-contact variant of the sport. It began in Australia and is now a nationwide non-selective program. AFL Academy
Australia has named a senior Australian rules football team, known as the All-Australian team since 1947. This team, however has never officially played an international Australian rules football match. This is primarily because the sport is played professionally in Australia. It has previously sent teams to play against Ireland's amateur Gaelic Athletic Association in the hybrid code of International Rules Football as the Australia international rules football team (this article is not about that team).
