Australian Society For The Study Of Labour History
The Australian Society for the Study of Labour History (ASSLH) was founded in 1961 to study 'the working class situation ... and social history in the fullest sense'. Founding members included Asa Briggs, Bob Gollan, Eric Fry, and others. Influenced by the work of E.P. Thompson, and the formation of the BritisSociety for the Study of Labour History they hoped to make labour history 'a popular pursuit, a study, and a part of ordinary people's lives'. The Society has published the journal Labour History since 1962 (now jointly published with Liverpool University Press), with the intention for it to 'be of immediate practical value to the labour movement'. The Society has branches in the ACT, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia. Asa Briggs
Asa Briggs, Baron Briggs (7 May 1921 – 15 March 2016) was an English historian. He was a leading specialist on the Victorian era, and the foremost historian of broadcasting in Britain. Briggs achieved international recognition during his long and prolific career for examining various aspects of modern British history. He became a life peer in 1976. Early life Asa Briggs was born in Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire in 1921 to William Briggs, an engineer, and his wife Jane. He was educated at Keighley Boys' Grammar School and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, graduating with a BA (first class) in History, in 1941, and a BSc in Economics (first class) from the University of London External Programme, also in 1941. ''Labour History: A Journal of Labour and Social History'' is a peer-review academic journal of labour history in Australasia. The journal was established in 1962 as the ''Bulletin of the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History'' by the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History (ASSLH), but was renamed ''Labour History'' in 1963. Rae Frances
Raelene Frances, (born 1955) is an Australian historian and academic at the Australian National University. Early life and education Frances was born in Collie, Western Australia as Raelene Frances Anderson in 1955. She left Collie Senior High School in 1972, having been dux that year and winning a University of Western Australia Exhibition in History and a Commonwealth scholarship. Frances graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in 1978 and completed her Master of Arts two years later at the same university, her thesis being ''Prostitution in Perth and Fremantle and on the Eastern Goldfields, 1895–1939''. Ann Margaret McGrath is the WK Hancock Chair of History at the Australian National University in Canberra. She is Director of the Research Centre for Deep History and Kathleen Fitzpatrick ARC Laureate Fellow 2017–22. In 1994, she was awarded the Human Rights Non-Fiction Award for ''Creating a Nation'' jointly with co-authors Patricia Grimshaw, Marilyn Lake and Marian Quartly. Francis Robert Bongiorno, (born 1969) is an Australian historian, academic and author. He is a professor of history at the Australian National University, and was head of the university's history department from 2018 to 2020. Bongiorno is the President of the Australian Historical Association. Personal life & education Bongiorno was born in Nhill, Victoria to a "working class" family of two children.
