Aurora Teixeira De Castro
Aurora Teixeira de Castro (18911931) was vice-president in 1926 and 1927 of the feminist ''Conselho Nacional das Mulheres Portuguesas'' (National Council of Portuguese Women). She was a lawyer and notary and the first female notary in Portugal. Early life and activism Aurora Teixeira de Castro was born in Porto, Portugal in 1891. She studied at the University of Coimbra, where she graduated in Law in 1916. As a member of the ''Conselho Nacional das Mulheres Portuguesas'', she played a major role in one of its early conferences, on the theme of “The legal situation of women in Portugal”, making four separate presentations. Almada () is a city and a municipality in Portugal, located on the southern margin of the Tagus River, on the opposite side of the river from Lisbon. Vitória Pais Freire de Andrade (18831930) was an active Portuguese feminist who played an important role in the ''Conselho Nacional das Mulheres Portuguesas'' (National Council of Portuguese Women - CNMP) in the 1920s. She is also known for her campaigning against bullfighting in Portugal. Early life Vitória Pais Freire de Andrade Madeira was born on 20 January 1883, in Ponte de Sor in the Portalegre District of Portugal. She was the daughter of José Albertino Freire de Andrade, a primary school teacher, and of Arsenia Maria Mineira. In 1903, at the age of 20 and already married, to Manuel Joaquim Madeira, a trader from Portalegre, she entered the Normal School of Portalegre, having already started teaching in several primary schools near her home.
