Caesar Augustus (born Gaius Octavius; 23 September 63 BC – 19 August AD 14), also known as Octavian, was the first Roman emperor; he reigned from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. He is known for being the founder of the Roman Principate, which is the first phase of the Roman Empire, and Augustus is considered one of the greatest leaders in human history. The reign of Augustus initiated an imperial cult as well as an era associated with imperial peace, the ''Pax Romana'' or ''Pax Augusta''. The Roman world was largely free from large-scale conflict for more than two centuries despite continuous wars of imperial expansion on the empire's frontiers and the year-long civil war known as the "Year of the Four Emperors" over the imperial succession. Augustus Smith (politician)
Augustus John Smith (15 September 1804 – 31 July 1872) was a British politician and philanthropist who served as Lord Proprietor of the Isles of Scilly for over thirty years from 1834 until his death in 1872, as well as serving as Member of Parliament for Truro from 1857 to 1865. As Lord Proprietor of the Isles of Scilly, he introduced numerous reforms to the islands, including improvements to education, tenancy structures and employment. He built his home on the island of Tresco, and started the Tresco Abbey Gardens. He was succeeded as Lord Proprietor by his nephew, Thomas Smith-Dorrien, after his death in 1872. Augustus Smith (priest)
Augustus Elder Smith (17 October 1844 – 8 January 1916) was an Anglican priest who served in two senior leadership positions within the Diocese of Trinidad and Tobago during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Smith was educated at Codrington College, Barbados and ordained in 1868. He played in three first-class matches for the Barbados cricket team from 1864 to 1872. After a curacy at St Silas, Barbados he was Rector and Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Port of Spain; and Archdeacon of Trinidad from 1902 until 1914. Augustus William Smith
Augustus William Smith (May 12, 1802 – March 26, 1866) was an American educator, astronomer and mathematician in the mid-19th century. Smith was born in Newport, Herkimer County, New York, May 12, 1802. He attended Hamilton College, and graduated in 1825. After college, he began teaching in the Methodist Oneida conference seminary, in Cazenovia, New York.. He became head of Oneida in 1827, the same year in which he married his wife, Catherine R. Childs. While at Oneida, he earned a master's degree from Hamilton. At the founding of Wesleyan University in 1831, Smith was named professor of mathematics and astronomy in Wesleyan, and in 1851, Smith was elected president of the university. He received two LL.D. degrees, one in 1850 from Centenary College of Louisiana and another in the 1850s from Hamilton College.
