Atwater Station (Montreal Metro)
Atwater station is a Montreal Metro station in the borough of Ville-Marie in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is operated by the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and serves the Green Line on the border between the city of Westmount and Montreal. The station opened on October 14, 1966, as part of the original network of the Metro; it was the western terminus of the Green Line until the extension to Angrignon in 1978. Architecture and art Designed by David, Boulva et Cleve, it is a normal side platform station, built in open cut under the De Maisonneuve Boulevard. It has a large mezzanine with ticket barriers on either end. It has underground city connections to Place Alexis Nihon, Westmount Square, and Dawson College. In August 2016, the Dawson exit was closed for refurbishment. A mezzanine (; or in Italian, a ''mezzanino'') is an intermediate floor in a building which is partly open to the double-height ceilinged floor below, or which does not extend over the whole floorspace of the building, a loft with non-sloped walls. The Atwater Library and Computer Centre (, officially the Atwater Library of the Mechanics' Institute of Montreal) is an independent community library in Westmount, Quebec, Canada, operating the oldest subscription library service in the country. It is located at 1200 Atwater Avenue. It is a privately operated, non-government, nonprofit organization, and a registered charity. It was founded in 1828. History The Atwater Library was home of the first Mechanics' Institute in Canada. It is also the oldest subscription library in Canada. Cabot Square, Montreal
Cabot Square is an urban square in Montreal, Quebec, Canada between the former Montreal Forum and the former Montreal Children's Hospital. The square is in the Shaughnessy Village neighbourhood, an area recently re-dubbed the ''Quartier des Grands Jardins'' and has been slated for redevelopment. It is one of three statues of John Cabot in Canada; the others are both in Newfoundland at Confederation Building in St. John's and Cape Bonavista. Alexis Nihon Complex
Alexis Nihon Complex (''French: Complexe Alexis Nihon'') is a building complex situated at the border of Downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada and the neighbouring city of Westmount, consisting of a shopping mall, two office towers, and a residential building. Although the complex is typically associated with Downtown Montreal and its main entrance on Atwater Avenue is in Montreal proper, more than 80% of the land it occupies is located in Westmount. It is named after the inventor and businessman Alexis Nihon. The shopping mall is directly connected to the Atwater metro station, which joins the building by a short tunnel with the adjacent Dawson College, and by a longer one adjoins nearby Westmount Square. Edwin Atwater
Edwin Atwater (September 14, 1808 – June 18, 1874) was a Canadian businessman, corporate director and municipal politician in Montreal. He started a business dealing paints, varnish and plate-glass, and was the first business to import glass into Canada. He served on the jury for the murder trial of François Jalbert, accused of murdering a British officer during the Lower Canada Rebellion. The jury acquitted Jalbert, in spite of strong public opinion by the anglophone community in favour of a guilty verdict. In 1846 he was a founder of the Montreal City and District Savings Bank, which continues in business today as the Laurentian Bank of Canada. He held various positions in the company. He was elected as a councillor to the Montreal City Council in 1850, and two years later was elected as an alderman to the same council. Atwater Avenue
Atwater Avenue (officially in ) is a major north–south street located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It links Doctor Penfield Avenue in the Ville-Marie borough to the north, and Henri Duhamel Street in the Verdun borough to the south. It is named for Edwin Atwater. The street runs through the Atwater Tunnel near the Atwater Market in Saint-Henri, before climbing and straddling the border of the city of Westmount. These towers sit atop an underground shopping centre consisting of thirty-five shops. It is located between Sainte Catherine Street West and De Maisonneuve Boulevard West and between Wood Avenue and Greene Avenue.
