Attorney General Of The Isle Of Man
The Attorney General () of the Isle of Man is the government's senior legal adviser and has an ''ex officio'' (non-voting) seat in the Legislative Council and in Tynwald Court. The Attorney General is a Crown officer, rather than a member of the Isle of Man Government. He is appointed by the monarch on the advice of the UK Secretary of State for Justice. Walter Wannenburgh was appointed to the office in October 2022 following the death in January 2022 of John Quinn QC, who first held the post in an acting capacity until 2017, while Stephen Harding was suspended and after Harding resigned. Harding was charged with perjury and committing acts against public justice, but after two trials in which the juries were unable to agree a verdict, it was announced that no further criminal proceedings would be taken. The Council of Ministers (; often abbreviated informally to "CoMin") is the principal executive organ of the Isle of Man Government. Its role is similar to, though not identical with, that of the Cabinet in the United Kingdom. Until 1990, its title was the Executive Council. The Executive Council, chaired by the Lieutenant Governor and including members of Tynwald, was established in 1949, and gradually thereafter became the effective government of the Island. The government of the Isle of Man is a parliamentary representative democracy. The Monarch of the United Kingdom is also the head of state of the Isle of Man, and generally referred to as "The King, Lord of Mann". Legislation of the Isle of Man defines "the Crown in right of the Isle of Man" as separate from the "Crown in right of the United Kingdom". His representative on the island is the Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, but his role is mostly ceremonial, though he does have the power to grant Royal Assent (the withholding of which is the same as a veto). King's Counsel
A King's Counsel (Post-nominal letters, post-nominal initials KC) is a senior lawyer appointed by the monarch (or their Viceroy, viceregal representative) of some Commonwealth realms as a "Counsel learned in the law". Thomas William Cain (1 June 1935 – 30 April 2021) was a First Deemster of the Isle of Man. Early life He was educated at Marlborough College and then Worcester College, Oxford. After performing his National Service from 1953 to 1955, he was called to the Bar at Gray's Inn in 1959 and admitted to the Manx bar in 1961, whence he worked for T W Cain and Sons, Advocates. Arthur Christian Luft (21 July 1915 – 21 June 2009) was a Manx judge, a former First Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls and a Member of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man. He first set up practice in the Isle of Man in 1947 and in 1972 was appointed Attorney General and thus sat on the Legislative Council ex officio. In 1974 he was made Second Deemster before being promoted to First Deemster, Clerk of the Rolls and Deputy Governor in 1980. He was the first First Deemster not to have an ''ex officio'' seat in the LegCo, the right having been removed by an Act of Tynwald in 1980. He retired as Deemster in 1988 but was elected by the House of Keys to sit on the Legislative Council, which he did for 10 years before retiring in 1998.
