The Attorney General of Tonga is Tonga's chief law officer, responsible for supervising Tongan law and advising the government on legal matters. Originally a Cabinet position held jointly with the portfolio of Minister of Justice, the office was made independent in 2009. The current Attorney General is Linda Folaumoetu'i. Linda Folaumoetu'i
Linda Simiki Folaumoetu’i is a Tongan lawyer and civil servant. Since 2019 she has served as Attorney General of Tonga, and is the first woman to ever serve in that role. Folaumoetu’i was educated at the University of Auckland, University of the South Pacific, and University of Melbourne. She worked as a legal officer for Tonga's Crown Law Department from 1993. In December 2006 she was appointed Solicitor General of Tonga. As Solicitor-General, she was responsible for the unsuccessful prosecution of pro-democracy members of Parliament over the 2006 Nukuʻalofa riots. From 2008 to 2014 she worked as a litigation advisor to the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands. After returning to Tonga in 2015 she was appointed chief executive of the Office of the Ombudsman (Tonga), Commissioner for Public Relations. The politics of Tonga take place in a framework of a constitutional monarchy, whereby the King is the Head of State and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Tonga's Prime Minister is currently appointed by the King from among the members of Parliament after having won the support of a majority of its members. Executive power is vested in the Cabinet of Ministers. Legislative power is vested in the King in Parliament, and judicial power is vested in the supreme court. Sione Vuna Fa'otusia (24 February 1953 – 29 August 2021) was a Tongan politician, Cabinet Minister, and Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga who served as the deputy prime minister of Tonga from 2019 to 2020. Personal life Fa'otusia received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales Faculty of Law, a Master's degree from the London School of Economics, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice. Prior to entering politics Fa'otusia was a member of the Tongan Public Servants Association and chair of its strike committee during the 2005 Tongan public service strike. From 2006 to 2008, he was Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Justice. He later moved to private practice. William Clive Edwards OBE (born 11 January 1934) is a Tongan barrister and politician who formerly served as a Cabinet Minister and Acting Deputy Prime Minister. He is a member of the People's Democratic Party. Life and education Edwards was born in Kolofo'ou, Nuku'alofa, Tonga. He was educated at Tonga High School and Auckland Grammar School in New Zealand in 1953 where he gained NZ University Entrance. He studied law at the University of Auckland and practiced in both New Zealand and Tonga before returning to Tonga permanently in 1994. He was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by the New Zealand government in 1995 for services to the community. Political career Edwards began his political career in New Zealand. ʻAsipeli ʻAminiasi Kefu is a Tongan lawyer and civil servant who has served as Solicitor General of Tonga. From 2014 to 2019 he was acting Attorney General of Tonga. Kefu was educated at Tonga High School and Nelson College. He studied law at the University of Waikato and Victoria University of Wellington, where he wrote a Masters thesis on "Recent constitutional developments in Tonga : where to now?".
