Attorney General Of Arkansas
The attorney general of Arkansas, usually known simply as the attorney general (AG), is one of Arkansas's seven State constitutional officer, constitutional officers. The officeholder serves as the state's top law enforcement officer and Consumer protection, consumer advocate. History The attorney general was not originally a state constitutional officer but rather was created by Act 1 of 1843, which designated the Arkansas attorney for the Fifth Judicial District as the attorney general. The first attorney general of Arkansas was Robert Ward Johnson, Robert W. Johnson. The Arkansas Constitution of 1868 made the post elective, though it required only that the attorney general “perform such duties as are now, or may hereafter, be prescribed by law.” This was reaffirmed in the Constitution of Arkansas, constitution of 1874. William Fosgate Kirby (November 16, 1867July 26, 1934) was a Democratic Party politician from Arkansas who represented the state in the U.S. Senate from 1916 to 1921. Kirby was born in Miller County, Arkansas, near Texarkana, on November 16, 1867, and attended common schools. He studied law at Cumberland School of Law at Cumberland University, graduating in 1885, in which year he was admitted to the bar and began practice in Texarkana. A member of the state House of Representatives in 1893 and again in 1897, Kirby served in the state senate from 1899 to 1901. In 1904, he wrote ''Kirby’s Digest of the Statutes of Arkansas''; in 1907, he moved to Little Rock. George Washington Murphy (1841–1920)
George Washington Murphy (January 8, 1841 – October 11, 1920) was a colonel in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War and served as the 22nd attorney general of Arkansas. Biography Murphy was born and grew up in Huntingdon, Tennessee. He enlisted in the Confederate army in May 1861. Murphy was wounded in the battles of Shiloh, Murfreesboro, and Harrisburg, and his leg injury at Harrisburg disqualified him from service for the rest of the war. In 1865 he moved to Hamburg, Arkansas, and studied law under W. D. Moore. Murphy was admitted to the bar in 1866, and practiced law at Hamburg until 1877. Murphy became well known as a prominent lawyer in Hot Springs, especially for his acumen as a criminal attorney. Jeff Davis (born Jefferson Davis; May 6, 1862 – January 3, 1913) was an American Democratic politician who served as the 20th governor of Arkansas from 1901 to 1907 and in the U.S. Senate from 1907 to 1913. He took office as one of Arkansas's first New South governors and proved to be one of the state's most polarizing figures. Davis used his silver tongue and aptitude for demagoguery to exploit existing feelings of agrarian frustration among poor white farmers and thus built a large populist appeal. Daniel Webster Jones (December 15, 1839December 25, 1918) was the 19th Governor of the U.S. state of Arkansas. Biography Jones was born in Bowie County, Texas to Isaac N. Jones, a doctor and member of the Congress of the Republic of Texas, and Elizabeth W. Littlejohn. Simon P. Hughes, Jr. (April 14, 1830 – June 29, 1906) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician who served as the 15th governor of Arkansas from 1885 to 1889.
