Atlas XH-1 Alpha
The Atlas XH-1 Alpha is a prototype attack helicopter built by Atlas Aviation (now Denel) of South Africa, which used it as a concept demonstrator for the then-planned Rooivalk project. Development It was developed from an Aérospatiale Alouette III airframe, retaining that helicopter's engine and dynamic components, but replacing the original cockpit with a stepped tandem one, adding a 20 mm cannon under the chin and converting the undercarriage to tail-dragger configuration. The XH-1 first flew on 3 February 1985,''Air International'' June 1986, p. 599. and soon embarked on a rigorous flight test program to examine the feasibility of a dedicated attack helicopter in southern African conditions. This is a list of attack aircraft. Attack aircraft are military aircraft used to attack targets on the ground with greater precision than strategic bombers. Modern attack aircraft may be expected to function in high threat environments where enemy air defences preclude the use of strategic bombers. Categories overlap depending on how the specific aircraft is used, along with that of fighters, fighter-bombers, and sometimes even trainers which have often been used for the role, particularly when they were obsolete in their original role. HESA Shahed 285 ( fa, شاهد ۲۸۵) is a light attack/reconnaissance helicopter developed in Iran. It was unveiled on . It is being produced in two versions: a light attack/recon version and a maritime patrol/anti-ship version. Design and development The Shahed 285 is based on the composite '' Shahed-278'', which is a relatively light helicopter with empty weight, derived from the Bell 206 Jetranger. Compared to the American OH-58 Kiowa that retains the airframe of the Bell 206, the Shahed 285 is a single-seater with a narrower fuselage, but retains the tail and powerplant / rotor structures, and is intended for military use.
