Athletics At The 2019 Pacific Games
Athletics was one of the 26 sports contested at the 2019 Pacific Games hosted by Samoa. The track and field events were held at Apia Park on 15–20 July, with the half marathon staged on a course at the Apia waterfront on 20 July. Forty-nine athletics events were contested at the games, including six parasport events. Participating nations A total of 21 countries, nineteen Pacific Games Association members plus Australia and New Zealand, competed in athletics at the 2019 games. It was the first Pacific Games where track and field athletes from Australia and New Zealand had participated. Note: A number shown in brackets is the size of the athletics contingent (excluding para-athletes) for each country. Medal table Papua New Guinea topped the medal table for athletics, retaining the position they won four years earlier. Fiji came in second while New Caledonia finished third. Apia
Apia () is the capital and largest city of Samoa, as well as the nation's only city. It is located on the central north coast of Upolu, Samoa's second-largest island. Apia falls within the political district (''itūmālō'') of Tuamasaga. The Apia Urban Area (generally known as the City of Apia) has a population of 37,391 (2016 census). Its geographic boundaries extend roughly from Letogo village to the newer, industrialized region of Apia known as "Vaitele". Daniel Baul (born 14 February 1996) is a Papua New Guinean track and field athlete, mainly sprinter. He won a gold medal in the men's 4 × 400 m relay at 2019 Pacific Games in Apia. Ian Dewhurst (born 13 November 1990) is an Australian athlete specialising in the 400 metres hurdles. He won a bronze medal at the 2013 Summer Universiade. In addition, he represented his country at the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games without qualifying for the final. Talatala oe Toetu Po'oi (born 30 March 1997) is a Tongan Track and field, Athlete who has represented Tonga at the Commonwealth Games, Pacific Games, and Pacific Mini Games. He has also been a member of the Tonga national under-20 football team. Po'oi is from Neiafu (Vavaʻu), Neiafu in the province of Vavaʻu. Mosese Foliaki (born 2000) is a Tongan Athlete who competes in the hurdles, high jump, and pole vault. He has represented Tonga at the Pacific Games and Pacific Mini Games. Derek Mandell (born September 18, 1986, in Tamuning, Guam) is a Guamanian middle-distance runner. He took part in the 2008 Oceania Athletics Championships, winning bronze, and 2008 Summer Olympics, where he broke a personal men's 800m record even though Mandell was eliminated in the first round.
