Athletics At The 1999 Summer Universiade
The track and field, Athletics Tournament at the 1999 Summer Universiade took place in the new Estadio Son Moix in Palma de Mallorca, Spain from 9-13 July,1999. Five List of Universiade records in athletics, Universiade records were set. A total of 23 men's and 22 women's events were contested (the programme remaining identical to the previous edition with steeplechase (athletics), steeplechase being for men only). The United States at the Universiade, United States topped the athletics medal table (as it did in Athletics at the 1997 Summer Universiade, 1997) with a total of 25 medals, twelve of them gold. Romania at the Universiade, Romania and Cuba at the Universiade, Cuba were the next strongest nations, with six and five gold medals respectively. Bernard Kipchirchir Lagat (born December 12, 1974) is a Kenyan-American former Middle-distance running, middle and long-distance running, long-distance runner. Lagat was born in Kapsabet, Kenya. Derrick Peterson (born November 28, 1977, in Waycross, Georgia), raised in Atlanta suburbs, is a retired American middle-distance runner who specialized in the 800 meters. He represented the USA at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, Canada. Was 2002 Indoor USA Track and Field Champion. André Bucher
André Bucher (born 19 October 1976) is a retired Swiss 800 metres runner who ran for Adidas. He is best known for winning the gold medal at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton in his event. Bucher also won the indoor bronze that same year. He was born in Neudorf. Bucher won two European Championship silver medals in 1998, 2002 and also silver at the 2002 Indoor. Other achievements include finishing third at the 2003 IAAF World Athletics Final. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney a medal was possibly chiselled out of him when he was barged into by his competitor Andrea Longo. Norberto Téllez Santana (born January 22, 1972, in Rodas, Cienfuegos) is a retired Cuban runner. Jopie van Oudtshoorn (born 5 February 1976) is a South African sprinter who specializes in the 400 metres. His personal best time is 44.75 seconds, achieved in April 1999 in Germiston. Together with Hendrick Mokganyetsi, Adriaan Botha and Arnaud Malherbe he holds the South African record in 4 x 400 metres relay with 3:00.20 minutes, achieved at the 1999 World Championships in Seville where South Africa finished fourth. Jerome Davis (born August 22, 1977) is an American former sprinter. He attended college at the University of Southern California, and was the Pacific-10 Conference champion in the men's 400m dash four consecutive years from 1996 through 1999. As a sophomore, Davis finished third at the 1997 NCAA men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a time of 45.36 In 1998, he won the NCAA Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Championship in the 400m event with a time of 45.18. Despite improving his time in the NCAA championships the following year, Davis finished third again, being edged out by LSU's Derrick Brew by 2 one-hundredths of a second for second place. At the 1999 World University Games, Davis took gold, with a time of 44.91. He was on the gold medal-winning USA men's 400m World Championship relay team in 1999. Patrick Petrus Marinus van Balkom (born September 14, 1974) is a former Dutch sprinter. Together with Caimin Douglas, Timothy Beck and Troy Douglas he won a bronze medal in 4 x 100 metres relay at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics. With this same team he also participated in the 4 x 100 meters relay at the 2004 Summer Olympics, but they were eliminated in the series due to a mistake in the changing area and did not qualify for the final. Coby Miller
Coby Miller (born October 19, 1976) is an American track and field athlete, who specialises in the sprint events. In his career, he recorded a sub-10 second personal best in the 100 meters and a sub-20 second best in the 200 meters. In the latter distance, he won the 1999 Summer Universiade and reached the 2000 Sydney Olympics final. He suffered leg injuries in the 2001 and 2002 seasons, but returned in late 2002 as part of the gold-medal-winning American 4 x 100 m relay team at the IAAF World Cup, breaking the championship record. He ran under ten seconds in the 100 m Olympics Trials in 2004, but failed to qualify for the event.
