200 Metres
The 200 metres, or 200-meter dash, is a sprint running event. On an outdoor 400-metre racetrack, the race begins on the curve and ends on the home straight, so a combination of techniques is needed to successfully run the race. A slightly shorter race, called the '' stadion'' and run on a straight track, was the first recorded event at the ancient Olympic Games. The 200 m places more emphasis on speed endurance than shorter sprint distances as athletes predominantly rely on anaerobic energy system during the 200 m sprint. Similarly to other sprint distances, the 200 m begins from the starting blocks. When the sprinters adopt the 'set' position in the blocks they are able to adopt a more efficient starting posture and isometrically preload their muscles. Sian Morris (born 16 June 1965) is a retired Welsh sprinter. Biography In 1980, as a student at Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera Bro Dur, Morris aged 15, won the 100 and 200 metres at the Welsh AAA Championships in Cwmbran. She was running for Port Talbot Harriers at the time. At the 1986 Commonwealth Games, the most successful games for Wales ever, she won a bronze medal in the 4 × 100 metres relay together with Helen Miles, Sallyanne Short and Carmen Smart. Mary-Estelle Mahuk (née Kapalu born 11 August 1966 in Tanna) is a Vanuatuan athlete. Mahuk competed in three Summer Olympics for her country, at the 1992 Summer Olympics she competed in two events, in the 400 metres she finished 7th in her heat, then in the 400 metres hurdles she again finished 7th in her heat so in neither did she qualify for the next round. Four years later she went to Atlanta for the 1996 Summer Olympics, she entered the 400 metres hurdle and this time finished 6th in her heat but again failed to qualify, then she went to the 2000 Summer Olympics and in the 400 metres hurdles and this time she finished 5th in her heat. Angela Bridgeman-Baxter (born 1963 or 1964) is a Scottish former athlete. Life and career She was born in London and her family moved to Glasgow when she was four months old. Her parents were born in Trinidad. She studied biochemistry at the University of Glasgow and then, in 1984, attended at Brigham Young University, Utah, US graduating with a sport and business degree in 1989. Sallyanne Short (born 6 March 1968) is a Welsh former sprinter who competed in the 100 metres and 200 metres. She represented Great Britain in the 4 x 100 metres relay at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Biography Short was born in Newport, Wales and began her international career in 1986. Kerry Dale Johnson (born 23 October 1963) is an Australian retired athlete who competed in the Sprint (running), sprints. She represented her country at the 1988 Summer Olympics, 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics. In addition, she won one gold and two silver medals at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Kim Simmone Geraldine Jacobs (born 5 September 1966) is a female retired British athlete who competed in the 100 metres and 200 metres.
