Athletics At The 1984 Summer Olympics – Men's High Jump
The men's high jump event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on 10–11 August 1984. Thirty athletes from 20 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Dietmar Mögenburg of West Germany, the nation's first victory in the men's high jump (mirroring East Germany's victory in 1980). Patrik Sjöberg's silver was Sweden's first medal in the event since 1920. Zhu Jianhua won bronze in the People's Republic of China's first appearance. The United States, which had made the podium in each of the 18 editions of the high jump before the 1980 boycott, now missed the podium for the first time in which the country competed, as Dwight Stones in fourth place fell just short of becoming the first man to earn three medals in the event. Gerd Nagel (born 22 October 1957 in Sulingen, Lower Saxony) is a retired West German high jumper. Biography He won the 1979 University Games and finished fourteenth at the 1987 World Championships. At the European Indoor Championships he won the silver in 1983 and a bronze in 1990, and finished fourth in 1982 and thirteenth in 1988. He represented the sports team LG Frankfurt and became West German champion in 1979. His personal best jump was 2.35 metres, achieved in August 1988 in Forbach. This result ranks him fifth among German high jumpers, behind Carlo Thränhardt, Gerd Wessig, Dietmar Mögenburg and Martin Buß. He had a better indoor jump with 2.36 metres, achieved in March 1989 in Sulingen. Carlo Thränhardt (, ; born 5 July 1957) is a retired German high jumper. He excelled at indoor competitions, setting the world indoor record on three occasions between 1984 and 1988. His best mark of 2.42 metres ranks him second on the indoor all-time list one-centimetre behind world record holder Javier Sotomayor of Cuba. The only superior outdoor performances are Sotomayor's world record of 2.45 m, and Mutaz Essa Barshim's clearance of 2.43 m in 2014. Like all modern high jumpers, Thränhardt used the Fosbury Flop style, but of the 16 men in history to have cleared 2.40 m or higher, he was only the second to do so jumping off his right leg. Milton Bruce Ottey (born December 29, 1959) is a retired Canadian high jumper who competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1988 Summer Olympics and won two Commonwealth Games gold medals. Biography Ottey came to Canada at around the age of 7. He attended and graduated from high school in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). He received a full athletic scholarship from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), where he received his bachelor's degree in education.
