The men's 1500 metres was an event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. The final was held on August 11, 1984. Fifty-nine athletes from 40 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by 0.87 seconds by Sebastian Coe of Great Britain, the first man to successfully defend an Olympic 1500 metres title. Steve Cram's silver made it the first time a nation had gone 1–2 in the event since Great Britain had done it in 1920. José Manuel Abascal's bronze was Spain's first medal in the event. Johan Fourie
Johan Fourie (born December 2, 1959) is a South African middle-distance athlete who was one of the world's leading 1500m/mile exponents in the 1980s but was prevented from competing internationally in his prime due to the sporting sanctions imposed on South Africa in condemnation of the policy of apartheid. Fourie's best 1500m performance was 3:33.87, a time recorded at the SA Championships in Stellenbosch in 1987 without significant opposition or pacemakers and his best mile time was 3:50.82 also recorded in 1987. During the mid-1980s he trained with Swiss Pierre Délèze in Europe. Paul Ceesay
Paul Ceesay is a Gambian Olympic middle-distance runner. He represented his country in the men's 1500 meters at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Ceesay attended Saint Augustine's High School in Banjul, Gambia. He is the twin brother of fellow athlete Peter Ceesay, and both brothers were honored at an alumni event in 2016. Ceesay was called one of the great track stars of the Gambia. At the 1984 Olympics, Ceesay ran 3:59.14 to finish 7th in his 1500 m heat, failing to advance to the semi-finals. Faouzi Lahbi
Faouzi Lahbi (born 2 March 1960) is a retired Moroccan middle distance runner who specialized in the 800 metres. He competed at the 1983 World Championships, and at the 1984 Olympics he competed in both 800 metres and 1500 metres. He won the bronze medal at the 1987 World Indoor Championships. He went on to finish fifth in the final at the 1987 World Championships and also competed at the 1988 Olympic Games. Stefano Mei (born 3 February 1963 in La Spezia) is an Italian long-distance runner who specialized in the 5000 and 10000 metres. European champion on 10000 m in 1986. Omer Khalifa
Omer Khalifa (born 18 December 1956) is a Sudanese retired middle distance runner who set a national record of 3:33.28 minutes over 1500 meters in Grosseto of 1986. Prior to this, he won silver medals in the 800 m and 1500 m races at the 1980 Olympic boycott, Olympic Boycott Games in 1980. Khalifa won the 1500 m race at the World Cup 1985 in Canberra. He finished fifth in the 1500 m final at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics in Rome and eighth in the 1984 Summer Olympics in the same event.
