An athlete is a person who participates regularly in a sport or sports that involve physical exertion, especially Sport of athletics, athletics (sports involving competitive running, jumping, throwing and walking). An athlete is most commonly a person who competes in one or more sports involving physical strength, speed, power, or endurance. Sometimes, the word "athlete" is used to refer specifically to sport of athletics competitors, i.e. including track and field and marathon runners but excluding e.g. swimmers, footballers or basketball players. However, in other contexts (mainly in the United States) it is used to refer to all athletics (physical culture) participants of any sport. For the latter definition, the word sportsperson or the gendered sportsman or sportswoman are also used. A third definition is also sometimes used, meaning anyone who is Physical fitness, physically fit regardless of whether they compete in a sport. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, cross-country running, and racewalking. Athlete (band)
Athlete were an English indie rock band formed in Deptford, London, comprising Joel Pott (lead vocals and guitar), Carey Willetts (bass and backing vocals), Stephen Roberts (drums and backing vocals), Tim Wanstall ( keyboards). The band had a brief period of high-profile domestic success in which their debut album '' Vehicles & Animals'' (2003) was a platinum seller in 2005 and Mercury Music Prize nomination. It was followed up by '' Tourist'' (2005) which reached No. 1 and sold over 500,000 copies allowing this album to also go platinum. Athlete's subsequent two albums, '' Beyond the Neighbourhood'' (2007) and ''Black Swan'' (2009), saw the band exploring different styles, influenced by the works of artists such as Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. ''Athletes'' is a 1977 series of silkscreen portraits by American artist Andy Warhol. Commissioned by Richard Weisman, the series consists of ten multi-colored portraits of the most celebrated athletes of the time: Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Chris Evert, Rod Gilbert, O.J. Simpson, Pelé, Tom Seaver, Willie Shoemaker, Dorothy Hamill, and Jack Nicklaus. History In 1977, art collector Richard Weisman proposed and idea to his friend Andy Warhol. As an avid sports fan, Weisman suggested that Warhol create a series of screen prints portraying the leading sports stars of the day.
