Asterio Appi is a Nauruan politician. Early life and education Asterio Appi studied abroad in Taiwan. He graduated from the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology from the Department of Tropical Agriculture and International Cooperation in 2011. Career In March 2016, Appi resigned as director of quarantine at the Department of Justice and Border Control. In the 2016 parliamentary election, Appi was elected to represent the Boe Constituency. He was elected alongside Baron Waqa. After the election, he served as deputy speaker, under Speaker Cyril Buraman. On 9 August, 2016, Appi was made a caucus member of the Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust Working Group. In the 2019 election, Appi was re-elected alongside Martin Hunt. Martin Hunt (politician)
Martin Porky Hunt is a Nauruan politician. Hunt has been a member of Nauruan Parliament and Minister Assisting the President of Nauru and Minister of Finance of Nauru since 29 August 2019. He still holds these positions as of August 2022. Hunt studied economics, history and politics at the University of the South Pacific between 1989 and 1991 and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree. In March 2008, Hunt was replaced by Clarissa Jeremiah as Nauruan Consul General based in Brisbane, Australia. Hunt then worked, as Chief Executive Officer of the state-owned Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation (2012 to 2014) and as Secretary for Finance at the Nauruan government (2013 to 2019). Russ Joseph Kun (born 8 September 1975) is a Nauruan politician who has been president of Nauru since being elected in the 2022 presidential election. He has served as a member of parliament for Ubenide since 2013. Biography Kun was born on 8 September 1975. He served as a scrutineer for the 2003 and 2004 general elections. Nauru Regional Processing Centre
The Nauru Regional Processing Centre is an offshore Australian immigration detention facility in use from 2001 to 2008, from 2012 to 2019, and from September 2021. It is located on the South Pacific island nation of Nauru and run by the Government of Nauru. The use of immigration detention facilities is part of a policy of mandatory detention in Australia. The Nauru facility was opened in 2001 as part of the Howard Government's Pacific Solution. The centre was suspended in 2008 to fulfil an election promise by the Rudd Government, but was reopened in August 2012 by the Gillard government after a large increase in the number of maritime arrivals by asylum seekers and pressure from the Abbott opposition. Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 24 September 2022 to elect all 19 members of parliament. All candidates were elected on a non-partisan basis. 2019 Nauruan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 24 August 2019. President Baron Waqa lost his seat in Boe Constituency, making him ineligible for a third term. Following the elections, Lionel Aingimea was elected President, winning a parliamentary vote 12–6 against David Adeang. Electoral system The 19 members of Parliament were elected from eight multi-member constituencies using the Dowdall system, a version of ranked voting; voters rank candidates, with the votes counted as a fraction of one divided by the ranking number (e.g. a candidate ranked second will be scored as ½); the candidates with the highest total were elected.
