Assistant Secretary Of The Navy (AIR)
The Assistant Secretary of the Navy (AIR) was a civilian office of the United States Department of the Navy. The Assistant Secretary of the Navy (AIR) initially reported to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy and later to the Under Secretary of the Navy. With the emergence of naval aviation as a major new military technique, the Navy had increasingly large organizations to oversee it. From 1910, there was an Officer in Charge of Aviation, then a Director of Naval Aeronautics, then in 1916 a Director of Naval Aviation. In 1921, Congress replaced those positions with a distinct Bureau of Aeronautics. Finally, on June 24, 1926, Congress created the position of Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Aeronautics to oversee the United States' naval aviation forces. The position was vacant from 1932 until 1941, and upon being re-occupied, the position was re-titled Assistant Secretary of the Navy (AIR) on September 11, 1941. Garrison Norton
Garrison Norton (October 9, 1900 – September 9, 1995) was Assistant Secretary of the Navy (AIR) from 1956 to 1959. Early life Garrison Norton was born in Chicago on October 9, 1900, the son of banker Charles Dyer Norton and the former Katherine McKim Garrison. His father was a "man of impeccable London tailoring and equally impeccable conservatism" who served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary to President Taft. Garrison, however, was described as "receptive to new ideas and as liberal as his father was conservative" even though he was also a Republican. Charles Sparks Thomas (September 28, 1897 – October 17, 1983) was an American politician who served as Secretary of the Navy from 1954 to 1957. Thomas was born in Independence, Missouri, and he attended the University of California and Cornell University. During World War I, he served as a naval aviator. He joined the Eisenhower Administration in 1953 as Undersecretary of the Navy; later that year, he designated an Assistant Secretary of Defense. During the 1930s, Thomas worked for Foreman and Clark.
