"Asphalt Risin" is a song by American stoner rock band Fu Manchu. It was released as a single in 1996 by Mammoth Records – the first of two single releases off the album '' In Search of...''. The B-side was a rendition of the 1975 song " Chevy Van" which was originally written and performed by Sammy Johns. It was featured in and on the soundtrack of the 1977 film '' The Van'', in which the main character drove around in a retrofitted custom van. Reception Dave Pehling from CBS news listed this song alongside the '' In Search of...'' track "Regal Begal" as the standouts which made the album it came from, "a bonafide classic of the genre" which he described as a " downtuned, psychedelic style of heavy stoner rock" created with "enormous fuzzed-out riffs." Fu Manchu (band)
Fu Manchu is an American stoner rock band formed in Orange County, California in 1985. The band underwent multiple lineup changes throughout the 80s and 90s, but has remained consistent since 2001. The band currently consists of founding guitarist turned lead vocalist Scott Hill, bassist Brad Davis, lead guitarist Bob Balch and drummer Scott Reeder. Fu Manchu have been long associated with the Palm Desert Scene, alongside bands such as Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss and Mondo Generator. ''Monster Riff'' has described the band as "one of the most loved and revered... bands in the stoner rock world." History Fu Manchu originally formed in 1985 as a hardcore punk band called Virulence. Sammy Reginald Johns (February 7, 1946 – January 4, 2013) was an American singer-songwriter known for his 1975 hit song "Chevy Van (song), Chevy Van", which was originally released in 1973. The song was RIAA certification, certified Music recording certification, gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, RIAA on May 5, 1975. Career Johns was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. Johns' father gave him a guitar when he was nine, and he founded his first band (the Devilles) in his teenage years. The group performed locally and made a few records for Dixie Records. Johns moved to Atlanta, where he signed with General Recording in 1973. His first solo recording was "Early Morning Love" (1973). "Chevy Van" (1975) reached No. 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100 record chart, chart and remained on the chart for 17 weeks. Guitar tunings are the assignment of pitches to the open strings of guitars, including classical guitars, acoustic guitars, and electric guitars. Tunings are described by the particular pitches that are made by notes in Western music. Stoner Rock
Stoner rock, also known as stoner metal or stoner doom, is a rock music fusion genre that combines elements of doom metal with psychedelic rock and acid rock. The genre emerged during the early 1990s and was pioneered foremost by Kyuss and Sleep. Characteristics Stoner rock is typically slow-to-mid tempo and features a heavily distorted, groove-laden bass-heavy sound, melodic vocals, and "retro" production. Due to the similarities between stoner and sludge metal, there is often a crossover between the two genres. This hybrid has traits of both styles, but generally lacks stoner metal's laid back atmosphere and its usage of psychedelia.
