''Ascent of the Nether Creatures'' is a live album by bassist Rashied Al Akbar, drummer Muhammad Ali, trumpeter Earl Cross, and saxophonist Idris Ackamoor. It was recorded on July 12, 1980, in the Netherlands, and was released on LP in limited quantities by NoBusiness Records in 2014. Reception In a review for ''All About Jazz'', John Sharpe described the album as "spirited and still vital music," and wrote: "The polyphonic blending of Cross' waspish angularities and Ackamoor's sinuous legato is what creates the excitement on this date... on bass Rashied Al Akbar furnishes a sturdy foundation in tandem with drummer Muhammad Ali." Derek Taylor of ''Dusted Magazine'' stated: "the music offers more than trading card scarcity in its snapshot of American players holding court in Europe at the cusp of the loft jazz era." Muhammad Ali (drummer)
Muhammad Ali (born Raymond Patterson, December 23, 1936) is an American free jazz drummer. Early life Ali was born and raised in Philadelphia where he, along with his father and brothers, converted to Islam. His older brother, Rashied Ali, was also a drummer. Career He recorded with Albert Ayler in 1969 on the sessions released as '' Music Is the Healing Force of the Universe'' and '' The Last Album''. Like many Jazz musicians of the 60's, he moved to Europe in 1969 along with Frank Wright, Noah Howard, and Bobby Few. '' The Jazz Discography'' states that Ali participated in 26 recording sessions from 1967 to 1983. In October 2006, Ali participated in a concert to celebrate John Coltrane's 80th birthday in his hometown of Philadelphia. Also featured were his brother, pianist Dave Burrell, and bassist Reggie Workman. He also played with alto saxophonist Noah Howard in the summer of 2008. Earl Cross
Earl Cross (December 8, 1933 – 1987) was a free jazz trumpeter best known for his association with saxophonists Noah Howard and Charles Tyler and percussionist Juma Sultan, as well as with the 1970s loft jazz scene in New York City. Career Cross was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and began playing music in his mid-teens. After high school, he entered the Air Force, where he associated with trumpeter Richard Williams, saxophonist Frank Haynes, and pianist Freddie Redd. He then went to California, where he performed in bands led by Larry Williams and Monty Waters, and also led his own group, which featured saxophonists Waters and Dewey Redman, trumpeters Alden Griggs and Norman Spiller, pianist Sonny Donaldson, bassist Benny Wilson, and drummer Art Lewis. In 1967, Cross moved to New York City and joined a band led by Sun Ra, whom he described as "an institution." Idris Ackamoor
Idris Ackamoor (born Bruce Baker, January 9, 1951) is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, actor, tap dancer, producer, administrator, and director. He is also artistic director of the jazz ensemble The Pyramids. The Pyramids He founded the band The Pyramids in the early 1970s at Antioch College in Ohio as part of Cecil Taylor's Black Music Ensemble. The band toured Africa in the 1970s, adding musicians and new instruments, before settling in San Francisco in the US. Exploratory self-releases Lalibela (1973), King Of Kings (1974), and Birth / Speed / Merging (1976) had very limited runs, being sold only at concerts out of the trunks of their cars. Free Jazz
Free jazz is an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting. They became preoccupied with creating something new and exploring new directions. The term "free jazz" has often been combined with or substituted for the term " avant-garde jazz". Europeans tend to favor the term " free improvisation". Others have used "modern jazz", "creative music", and "art music". The ambiguity of free jazz presents problems of definition. NoBusiness Records is an independent record label, based in Vilnius, Lithuania. History The label was founded in 2008 by Danas Mikailionis and Valerij Anosov. The latter is the owner of a jazz-oriented record store in Vilnius named ''Thelonious''; according to Mikailionis, it is "probably the only store in Vilnius where one can find non-commercial music." Prior to starting the label, Mikailionis and Anosov put on concerts that featured artists such as William Parker, Matthew Shipp, Howard Riley, Joe McPhee, and Barry Guy. However, it was saxophonist Mats Gustafsson who, after performing a solo set, as well as one with Lithuanian musicians, encouraged them to found their own record label.
