Arts Of Life
Arts of Life, based in Chicago, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides studio space, supplies, professional development support, and exhibition opportunities to artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities. At the time of its founding in 2000, Arts of Life was the first program in Chicago to provide employment in the arts for adults with developmental disabilities. Sheltered Workshop
The term sheltered workshop refers to an organization or environment that employs people with disabilities separately from others, usually with exemptions from labor standards, including but not limited to the absence of minimum wage requirements. In the United States, an exemption in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 allowed a lower minimum wage for people with disabilities, intended to help disabled World War I veterans have opportunities for employment. The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) () is a modern art museum serving the Chicago area with an ongoing program of cultural exhibitions, literary events, film screenings, and music recitals. Heavy Load (punk Band)
Heavy Load were an English punk rock band, described by ''The Sunday Times'' in 2009 as "possibly the most genuinely punk band touring today". Its members met at Southdown Housing, a non-profit assisted-living community for people with mental health issues and learning disabilities, and were a mix of service users and staff. The band composed the theme for the BAFTA-nominated film ''Cast Offs'' and is itself documented in the film ''Heavy Load''.
