Arthur Ap Gwynn
Arthur ap Gwynn (1902–1987) was the third librarian at the University College of Wales and an editor. Early life and education Born 4 November 1902 in Caernarfon, Arthur ap Gwynn was the son of Margaret Jane Jones and poet T. Gwynn Jones, whilst his father worked for the newspapers ''Yr Herald Cymraeg'', ''Papur Pawb'' and the ''Carnarvon & Denbigh Herald.'' He was a middle child, between Eluned and Llywelyn. His family moved several times before settling in 1909 in Aberystwyth, where he attended Ardwyn County School. He graduated in 1923 with first class honours from University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. Three or four years later, he received his M.A. degree. Career He worked at the National Library of Wales from 1923 to 1925. He was employed at the Cardiff Free Library until 1932 as the Welsh department head. Caernarfon
Caernarfon (; ) is a royal town, community and port in Gwynedd, Wales, with a population of 9,852 (with Caeathro). It lies along the A487 road, on the eastern shore of the Menai Strait, opposite the Isle of Anglesey. The city of Bangor is to the north-east, while Snowdonia fringes Caernarfon to the east and south-east. Carnarvon and Caernarvon are Anglicised spellings that were superseded in 1926 and 1974 respectively. Abundant natural resources in and around the Menai Strait enabled human habitation in prehistoric Britain. The Ordovices, a Celtic tribe, lived in the region during the period known as Roman Britain. Aberystwyth
Aberystwyth () is a University town, university and seaside town as well as a community (Wales), community in Ceredigion, Wales. Located in the Historic counties of Wales, historic county of Cardiganshire, means "the mouth of the River Ystwyth, Ystwyth". A librarian is a person who works professionally in a library providing access to information, and sometimes social or technical programming, or instruction on information literacy to users. Thomas Gwynn Jones
Professor Thomas Gwynn Jones C.B.E. (10 October 1871 – 7 March 1949), more widely known as T. Gwynn Jones, was a leading Welsh poet, scholar, literary critic, novelist, translator, and journalist who did important work in Welsh literature, Welsh education, and the study of Welsh folk tales in the first half of the twentieth century. He was also an accomplished translator into Welsh of works from English, German, Greek, and Irish. Personal life Thomas Jones was born at Y Gwyndy Uchaf in Betws-yn-Rhos, Denbighshire, Wales, the eldest son of Isaac Jones and Jane Roberts. He was educated in Denbigh and Abergele. In 1899 he married Margaret Jane Davies, the daughter of Thomas Davies of Denbigh, by whom he had three children. Ceredigion
Ceredigion ( , , ) is a county in the west of Wales, corresponding to the historic county of Cardiganshire. During the second half of the first millennium Ceredigion was a minor kingdom. It has been administered as a county since 1282. Ceredigion is considered a centre of Welsh culture and just under half of the population can speak Welsh according to the 2011 Census. Hugh Owen (educator)
Sir Hugh Owen (14 January 1804 – 20 November 1881) was a pioneer of higher education in Wales. He was the main founder of the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth. Life He was born in Llangeinwen, on Anglesey and moved to London at the age of 21 to work as a solicitor's clerk. He went to work for the Poor Law Commission in 1836, eventually becoming its Chief Clerk in 1853. Owen became involved in the British and Foreign School Society in London and in 1843 published an open letter to the people of Wales, advocating the need to establish British and Foreign schools in Wales. As a non-conformist he supported the idea of non-denominational day schools. In 1843 he was instrumental in the appointing of an agent for the British and Foreign schools Society in North Wales, and then in South Wales at a later date.
