Arthur Jones (Australian Cricketer)
Arthur Jones (17 December 1874 – 2 December 1917) was an Australian cricketer who began his career as a spin bowler but later improved his batting and kept wicket. He played in three first-class matches for Queensland between 1897 and 1911. In his career he was a lawyer. Personal life Jones married Gertrude Mabyn Lawry in 1900 and in 1902 they had a son, Alan, while living in Queensland. At some point after 1915 the family moved to Perth, Western Australia. In January 1917 Jones enlisted in the army in Fremantle under the assumed name Richard Paul Mitchell, was appointed a Lance Corporal in April, and sailed to England for training in Salisbury Plain in June. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Salisbury Plain
Salisbury Plain is a chalk plateau in the south western part of central southern England covering . It is part of a system of chalk downlands throughout eastern and southern England formed by the rocks of the Chalk Group and largely lies within the county of Wiltshire, but stretches into Hampshire. The plain is famous for its rich archaeology, including Stonehenge, one of England's best known landmarks. Large areas are given over to military training and thus the sparsely populated plain is the biggest remaining area of calcareous grassland in northwest Europe. Queensland Premier Cricket
Queensland Premier Cricket is the top cricket competition played in Queensland, Australia. The competition was founded under the name Brisbane Electoral Cricket in 1897 and eventually came to be known as Brisbane Grade Cricket, but has since expanded to take in teams from Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and Ipswich. As of the 2019/20 season there were six grades in the Two-Day Bulls Masters competition. In addition to the two-day Grade competition there is also a One-Day competition for the John McKnoulty Cup and a T20 competition for the Tom Veivers Trophy. There is also a women's One-Day competition for the Katherine Raymont Shield contested by eight sides as of the 2020/21 season, and a women's T20 competition under Queensland Premier Cricket. South Brisbane District Cricket Club
South Brisbane District Cricket Club is a cricket club in South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. They were founded in 1897 and compete in the Queensland Premier Cricket competition. South Brisbane is the equal most successful side in the Queensland Premier Cricket First-grade competition having 21 Premierships alongside Toombul. They dominated the 1900s winning the premiership in six out of ten seasons in the decade, and also notably won three consecutive premierships from 1962 to 1964, but the club has also achieved success consistently throughout its history winning premierships in every decade except the 1920s and 1950s, however it has not found success in recent years winning its last First-grade premiership in 2001. South African Cricket Team In Australia In 1910–11
The South Africa national cricket team toured Australia from November 1910 to March 1911 to play five test matches against Australia. This was the South Africans first tour of Australia and the second tour between the two nations after the Australia tour of South Africa in late 1902. Before the first test, the South Africans played in five warm-up matches before the first test. Australia would win the opening two tests of the series in Sydney and Melbourne, before South Africa recorded their first test win against Australia in the third test at Adelaide by 28 runs. Three more tour matches against Tasmania and Victoria were played before the fourth test in Melbourne where the Australians won the series by 530 runs.
