Arthur Davidson (equerry)
Colonel (United Kingdom), Colonel Sir Arthur Davidson, (12 November 1856 – 16 October 1922) was a British soldier and courtier. Davidson was born in Shooter's Hill, Kent, and grew up in Welwyn, Hertfordshire. He was educated at Henley Grammar School and Bute House School, Petersham, London, Petersham. In September 1875 he was commissioned Sub-Lieutenant in the 4th Foot, but a year later transferred to the 60th Rifles and was posted to the 2nd Battalion in India. Soon afterwards he was promoted Lieutenant. He took part in the Second Afghan War in 1878–1880 and was appointed Aide-de-camp, ADC to Donald Stewart (Indian Army officer), Lieutenant-General Sir Donald Stewart, and later to Major-General Ross. He served in the First Boer War, Boer War in 1881 and fought at the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir in 1882. Arthur Irving Davidson (28 August 1875 – 5 September 1961) was an Australian Presbyterian minister, military chaplain and Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Early life The son of Presbyterian Minister Rev. Arthur Davidson (1847–1924) and Helen Allen Davidson, nee Pritchard (1849–1936), Arthur Irving Davidson was born in the inner Melbourne suburb of Carlton on 28 August 1875. His father served as minister at the John Knox Church in Swanston Street in Melbourne before moving to a parish in Geelong in 1879 where Davidson spent the majority of his childhood. Arthur Davidson Sr. (February 11, 1881 – December 30, 1950) was an American businessman. He was one of the four original founders of Harley-Davidson. Early life Davidson was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to William C Davidson (1846–1923), who was born and grew up in Angus, Scotland, and Margaret Adams McFarlane (1843–1933) of Scottish descent from the small Scottish settlement of Cambridge, Wisconsin, and raised five children together: Janet May, William A., Walter, Arthur and Elizabeth. Arthur Davidson, QC (7 November 1928 – 16 January 2018) was a British Labour Party politician. Early life Davidson was educated at Liverpool College, King George V School, Southport, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the university athletics team and captained the college team. He served with the Merchant Navy and became a barrister, called to the bar by Middle Temple in 1953, and appointed a QC in 1978. Political career Davidson contested Blackpool South in 1955 and Preston North in 1959. He was Member of Parliament for Accrington from 1966 to 1983, when the seat was abolished by boundary changes. He stood in the new seat of Hyndburn, but lost by just 21 votes to the Conservative Ken Hargreaves. He was a minister in the Attorney General's Department between 1974 and 1979, under Harold Wilson and James Callaghan. From November 1982 to June 1983, he was Shadow Attorney General.
