Arthur Atkinson (rugby League)
Arthur Atkinson (5 April 1906 – 1963), also known by the nickname of 'Bruss', was an English professional rugby league footballer who played, mostly as a , from 1925 to 1940. He competed at representative level for Great Britain, England and Yorkshire, and at club level for Castleford. He was captain of his club for some time. Some believe Atkinson holds the world record for a goal kick in any form of rugby because he kicked a penalty from in the 20-10 victory over St. Helens at their Knowsley Road ground on 26 October 1929. However, England and Cumberland forward Martin Hodgson kicked a penalty goal for Swinton against Rochdale Hornets at the Athletic Grounds, Rochdale on 13 April 1940. William Asquith
William "Nat" Asquith was a rugby league footballer who played for Castleford from September 1926. He introduced Arthur Atkinson to the sport when he suggested as they were going home from work at a coal pit that they should detour to watch Castleford training at their old ground. When Castleford became a professional club for the 1926–27 season, Asquith made his debut in their 4 September 1926 defeat by Hunslet. A newspaper report of 1929 commented that he and Atkinson were "usually a strong confederacy on the Castleford right wing" while Robin Adair wrote a year later in the ''Hull Daily Mail'' that he thought Asquith was "destined for higher honours". Asquith was hospitalised after the match against Featherstone Rovers on 25 December 1930, when he suffered a ruptured spleen. Benefit Match
A benefit is a match or season of activities granted by a sporting body to a loyal sportsman to boost their income before retirement. Often this is in the form of a match for which all the ticket proceeds are given to the player in question. However hosting one of these matches is a risk for the player in question as they are responsible for paying any relevant receipts and collects any excess income from the match, therefore income from such matches is more often than not reliant on attendance. Sometimes, the "beneficiary" can opt to give part or all of the money to charity. An example of this is Paul Collingwood's 2007 benefit with Durham County Cricket Club. Wakefield Trinity is a professional rugby league club in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. The club play their home fixtures at the DIY Kitchen Stadium, Belle Vue (Wakefield), Belle Vue and currently compete in the Super League, the top tier of the British rugby league system. The club was one of the original twenty-two clubs that formed the Rugby Football League, Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895. The 1938–39 Rugby Football League season was the 44th season of rugby league football. Season summary Salford won their fourth Championship when they defeated Castleford 8–6 in the play-off final. Salford had also ended the regular season as league leaders. The Challenge Cup Winners were Halifax who defeated Salford 20–3 in the final. Newcastle dropped out of the competition. York Wasps
The York Wasps (known simply as York from 1868 to 1989, Ryedale-York from 1989 to 1996 and York Wasps from 1996 to 2002) was an English professional rugby league club based in York. At the start of the 2002 season, the club was dissolved. A new club, York City Knights was established to take the Wasps' place for the 2003 season. RFL Yorkshire League
The Yorkshire League and the Lancashire League formed two sections of the Rugby Football League Championship for much of its history. Initially, the 22 clubs that broke away in 1895 played in one combined league; however, the following season saw the addition of many clubs, and the League was split into two separate county competitions. History This situation endured until 1901–1902, when the top teams in each league resigned and formed a new combined first division. The following season, the remaining clubs formed a second division. From then until 1907, when there was another re-organisation, the county leagues were not played. Brotherton St Johns
Brotherton is a village and civil parish in the county of North Yorkshire, England. The village is on a border with the City of Wakefield and West Yorkshire (here formed by the River Aire). History Brotherton was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974.
