''Art-Rite'' was a cheaply produced newsprint art magazine that was published from 1973 to 1978. Located in downtown New York City, it was distributed freely there. Its editors were Mike (Walter) Robinson, Edit DeAk, and Joshua Cohn. Cohn dropped out of Art-Rite relatively early. Formation and Trajectory DeAk, Robinson, and Cohn met in 1972 in an art criticism class taught by Brian O'Doherty at Barnard College in New York. Based on this experience, the magazine took an agglomerative ground-level view of the art world. The editors often wrote anonymously, reflecting a collaborative process. Indeed, ''Art-Rite'' had a collaborative relationship with the art world (particularly with its own generation) and had a close relationship with the post-minimal and post-conceptual downtown art community that was in the process of moving away from formalism and towards an art of appropriation. Edit DeAk (; formerly deAk; ; September 16, 1948 – June 9, 2017) was a Hungarian-born American art critic and writer, co-founder of the journal ''Art-Rite'' and the non-profit bookstore and artist book distributor, Printed Matter, Inc. Early life and education DeAk was born Edit Deak in Budapest, Hungary, to Elvira (née Csutkai) and Béla Deak. In 1968, DeAk escaped Communist Hungary in the trunk of a car into Yugoslavia. She and her husband, Peter Grosz, eventually came to New York City via Italy. In 1972, DeAk received a B.A. in Art History from Columbia University. Rosemary Mayer
Rosemary Mayer (1943–2014), was an American visual artist who was closely associated with the feminist art movement and the conceptual art movement of the 1970s. She was a founding member of A.I.R. gallery, the first all-female artists cooperative gallery in the United States. Early life Mayer was born and raised in Ridgewood, New York, and lived in New York City for most of her life. She attended Saint Matthias grammar school in Ridgewood, NY, and Saint Saviour High School in Brooklyn. She studied classics at St. Joseph's College and the University of Iowa and fine art at the School of Visual Arts and the Brooklyn Museum Art School. Walter Robinson (aka Mike Robinson, born 1950, Wilmington, Delaware) is a New York City-based painter, publisher, art curator and art writer. He has been called a Neo-pop painter, as well as a member of the 1980s The Pictures Generation. Life and education Robinson was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and raised in Tulsa. He moved to New York City to attend Columbia University in 1968. Subsequently, he graduated from the Whitney Independent Study Program in 1973. Pat Steir
Pat Steir (born 1940) is an American Painting, painter and Printmaking, printmaker. Her early work was loosely associated with conceptual art and minimalism, however, she is best known for her abstract dripped, splashed and poured "Waterfall" paintings, which she started in the 1980s, and for her later site-specific wall drawings. Dorothea Rockburne
Dorothea Rockburne DFA (born c. 1932) is an abstract painter, drawing inspiration primarily from her deep interest in mathematics and astronomy. Her work is geometric and abstract, seemingly simple but very precise to reflect the mathematical concepts she strives to concretize. William Wegman (photographer)
William Wegman (born December 2, 1943) is an American artist best known for creating series of compositions involving dogs, primarily his own Weimaraners in various costumes and poses. Life and career Wegman originally intended to pursue a career as a painter.
