Ars Minerva
Ars Minerva is an American opera company founded in 2013 by mezzo-soprano Céline Ricci. It is based in San Francisco, California. The company, run as a non-profit organization, produces little-known Baroque Italian operas researched by the founding director. They have been well received by audiences and critics. Programming 2015 ''La Cleopatra'' (1662) by Daniele da Castrovillari, libretto by Giacomo dall'Angelo. ''Cleopatra'' was performed at the Marines Memorial Theater in San Francisco, with the title role sung by Céline Ricci and Marc Antonio by countertenor Randall Scotting. 2016 ''The Amazons in the Fortunate Isles'', or ''Le Amazone nelle Isole Fortunate'' (1679) by Carlo Pallavicino, libretto by C.M. Piccioli. The modern premiere of ''Amazons'' by Ars Minerva opened in May 2016. Baroque
The Baroque (, ; ) is a style of architecture, music, dance, painting, sculpture, poetry, and other arts that flourished in Europe from the early 17th century until the 1750s. In the territories of the Spanish and Portuguese empires including the Iberian Peninsula it continued, together with new styles, until the first decade of the 19th century. Carlo Pallavicino
Carlo Pallavicino (Pallavicini; c. 1630 – 29 January 1688) was an Italian composer. Pallavicino was born at Salò. From 1666 to 1673, he worked at the Dresden court; from 1674 to 1685, at the ''Ospedale degli Incurabili'' (a conservatory where orphaned children were musically trained) in Venice and further in Dresden. In August and September 1687, he was with the concert master Georg Gottfried Backstroh back in Venice. He asked for renewal of his leave because his wife expected to give birth, but he was rejected. He died in Dresden, and his grave is located in the Convent of the St. Mariestern. He wrote more than 20 operas premiered in Venice and Dresden, oratorios and sacred works. His son, Dresden court writer Stefano Benedetto Pallavicino, was a known librettist. Domenico Freschi
Giovanni Domenico Freschi (26 March 1634 – 2 July 1710) was an Italian composer and Roman Catholic priest. From the age of 22 until his death he worked as a church musician and composer in Vincenza. He was also active as an opera composer from 1671 to 1685. Life and career Born in Bassano del Grappa, Freschi was appointed the ''maestro di cappella'' at the Cathedral of Vicenza on 14 December 1656; just a few years after his ordination. He remained in that post until his death in Vincenza 53 and a half years later. His sacred music compositions were frequently performed at the cathedral and at other major churches in Vincenza during his lifetime. In addition to his work as a church musician and composer, Freschi also had an active career as an opera composer.
