Arrogant-class Ship Of The Line
The ''Arrogant''-class Ship of the line, ships of the line were a class of twelve Seventy-four (ship), 74-gun third rate ships designed by Sir Thomas Slade for the Royal Navy. Design The ''Arrogant''-class ships were designed as a development of Slade's previous , sharing the same basic dimensions. During this period, the original armament was the same across all the ships of the common class, of which the ''Arrogant''-class ships were members. Two ships were ordered on 13 December 1758 to this design (at the same time as the fourth and fifth units of the ''Bellona'' class), and a further ten ships were built to a slightly modified version of the ''Arrogant'' design from 1773 onwards. A ship of the line was a type of naval warship constructed during the Age of Sail from the 17th century to the mid-19th century. The ship of the line was designed for the naval tactic known as the line of battle, which depended on the two columns of opposing warships maneuvering to volley fire with the cannons along their broadsides. In conflicts where opposing ships were both able to fire from their broadsides, the opponent with more cannons firingand therefore more firepowertypically had an advantage. Since these engagements were almost invariably won by the heaviest ships carrying more of the most powerful guns, the natural progression was to build sailing vessels that were the largest and most powerful of their time. John Randall (shipbuilder)
John Randall (1755–1802) was an English shipbuilder. Life The son of John Randall, shipbuilder of Rotherhithe, he had a liberal education, and on the death of his father, around 1776, continued the shipbuilding business under his own management. He also worked on mathematics, and naval construction. In addition to many ships which he built for the mercantile marine and for the East India Company, Randall built over 50 naval vessels. They included 74-gun ships and large frigates, among them being HMS ''Audacious'', HMS ''Ramillies'', and HMS ''Culloden'', noted in the French Revolutionary Wars. He took a prominent part in founding the Society of Naval Architects. On the Peace of Amiens, Randall lowered his rates of pay from the wartime level, and his men went out on strike. Buckler's Hard is a hamlet on the banks of the Beaulieu River in the English county of Hampshire. With its Georgian cottages running down to the river, Buckler's Hard is part of the Beaulieu Estate. The hamlet is some south of the village of Beaulieu. History Buckler's Hard, originally called Montagu Town, was built by the second Duke of Montagu, and was intended to be a free port for trade with the West Indies. Bursledon is a village on the River Hamble in Hampshire, England. It is located within the borough of Eastleigh. Deptford Dockyard
Deptford Dockyard was an important naval dockyard and base at Deptford on the River Thames, operated by the Royal Navy from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Seventy-four (ship)
The "seventy-four" was a type of two- decked sailing ship of the line, which nominally carried 74 guns. It was developed by the French navy in the 1740s, replacing earlier classes of 60- and 62-gun ships, as a larger complement to the recently-developed 64-gun ships. Impressed with the performance of several captured French seventy-fours, the British Royal Navy quickly adopted similar designs, classing them as third rates. The type then spread to the Spanish, Dutch, Danish and Russian navies. The design was considered a good balance between firepower and sailing qualities. Woolwich Dockyard (formally H.M. Dockyard, Woolwich, also known as The King's Yard, Woolwich) was an English naval dockyard along the river Thames at Woolwich in north-west Kent, where many ships were built from the early 16th century until the late 19th century.
