Around The Bay Road Race
The Around the Bay Road Race (ATB) is a long distance road race annually in Hamilton, Ontario. The event features a 30 kilometer race, a 5 kilometer race, a 10 kilometer race, a 15 kilometer race, and virtual races. First held in 1894, it is the oldest long distance road race in North America. Since it began, the race has been held every year except for 1917 to 1919 (due to World War I), 1925 to 1935, 1962 (due to construction), and 2020 and 2021 (due to the COVID-19 pandemic). History The Hamilton Herald Newspaper and cigar store owner "Billy" Carroll, originated and sponsored the "Herald Road Race", the first Around the Bay Road Race, run on Christmas Day, 1894. Jack Caffery (track And Field Athlete)
John Peter Caffery (May 21, 1879 – February 12, 1919) was a Canadians, Canadian Track and field, track and field athlete who competed in the Athletics at the 1908 Summer Olympics – Men's marathon, marathon at the 1908 Summer Olympics where he finished in 11th place. Caffrey was also a two-time champion of the Boston Marathon. He won with a time of 2:39:44.4 in 1900 and with a time of 2:29:23.6 in 1901, both of which were course records for the then 25-mile course. Caffrey was the son of Irish immigrants. He was a teamster by trade and represented St. Patrick's Athletic Association/St. Patrick's Athletic Club. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario and died there from complications after falling ill with Spanish flu. A sinkhole is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer. Burlington Canal Lift Bridge
Burlington Canal Lift Bridge is a vertical lift bridge located to the north side of the Burlington Bay James N. Allan Skyway in Burlington, Ontario. Built in 1962, the bridge is the sixth bridge to span the Burlington Canal since 1830. The bridge allows vessels to enter and exit from Hamilton Harbour into Lake Ontario. The bridge does not lift during the winter months (January to late March). The bridge carries Eastport Drive across the canal with two lanes for traffic in each direction, as well as a single pedestrian walkway on the west side. Traffic light and signalized gates are found on both ends of the bridge. The road surface on the bridge is not paved, but rather metal grating. CHML (900 AM) was a commercial radio station in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, owned by Corus Entertainment. The station's long-time slogan was "Hometown Radio". It went off the air on August 14, 2024 at 1 p.m., shortly after Corus announced that the station would be closing. Its power was 50,000 watts, the maximum for Canadian AM stations. It had a directional antenna with an eight-tower array. Its signal was oriented largely west-northwest to east-southeast, covering the Niagara Peninsula and Western New York. James Ivan Miller (December 31, 1898 – June 2, 1967) was a Canadian journalist and sportscaster. He worked 45 years for ''The Hamilton Spectator'' as a columnist, sports editor, and sports director, where he regularly covered the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Canadian football. As a radio sportscaster on CKOC, he gave play-by-play coverage of golf and ice hockey. As the founding president of the Ontario Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, he organized annual sports celebrities dinners to benefit the Ontario Society for Crippled Children. His final project was a book on the history of sports in Hamilton. He was posthumously inducted into the media section of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, and the builder category of the Hamilton Sports Hall of Fame. Robert Scade "Scotty" Rankine (January 6, 1909 – January 10, 1995) was a Canadian Track and field athletics, athlete who competed in the 1932 Summer Olympics and in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Tom Longboat
Thomas Charles Longboat (4 July 18869 January 1949, Iroquois name: Cogwagee) was an Onondaga distance runner from the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario and, for much of his career, the dominant long-distance runner. He was known as the "bulldog of Britannia" and was a soldier in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) during the First World War. Athletic history When Longboat was a child, a Mohawk () resident of the reserve, Bill Davis, who in 1901 finished second in the Boston Marathon, interested him in running races. He began racing in 1905, finishing second in the Victoria Day race at Caledonia, Ontario.
