Arnold I Van Isenburg
Arnold (or Arnoud) van Isenburg (died in April or June 1197) was Bishop of Utrecht from 1196 to 1197. Arnold descended from the German House of Isenburg and had been provost in Deventer since 1176. After Bishop Baldwin II van Holland died, Arnold was pushed forward by the count of Guelders. He was also supported by the archbishop of Cologne and the pope. However, Dirk VII, Count of Holland wanted his uncle, Dirk of Holland as bishop of Utrecht, and he was supported by Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor. The resulting impasse led to Arnold being recognised by the Oversticht, while Dirk was recognised in the Nedersticht. Dirk I (bishop)
Dirk van Holland (died at Pavia, 28 August 1197) was bishop of Utrecht in 1197. Dirk van Holland was the son of Count Dirk VI of Holland and Sophia van Rheineck. This made him brother to Count Floris III of Holland and Bishop Baldwin of Utrecht. After Baldwin's death, Dirk was put forward by their nephew Count Dirk VII of Holland as candidate for the vacant seat at Utrecht. He was supported by Emperor Henry VI. However, the count of Guelders nominated Arnold I van Isenburg for the seat, and Arnold was supported by the archbishop of Cologne and the pope. The impasse resulted in Dirk being recognised in the Nedersticht while Arnold was recognised in the Oversticht. Both candidates travelled to Rome, where Arnold was consecrated as bishop by Pope Celestine III in 1196. Arnold died in the same year however, which allowed Dirk to be consecrated after all. Pope Celestine III (; c. 1105 – 8 January 1198), was the head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 30 March or 10 April 1191 to his death in 1198. He had a tense relationship with several monarchs, including Emperor Henry VI, King Tancred of Sicily, and King Alfonso IX of León. Early career Giacinto Bobone was born into the noble Orsini family in Rome. He was appointed as cardinal-deacon in 1144 by Celestine II or Lucius II. Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor
Henry VI (German language, German: ''Heinrich VI.''; November 1165 – 28 September 1197), a member of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, was King of Germany (King of the Romans) from 1169 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1191 until his death. He was the elder son of Floris III and Ada of Huntingdon. Life Due to a civil war in the Holy Roman Empire, Emperor Henry VI had to find ways to make friends. He supported Dirk by giving him the right to levy tolls on Flemish traders in Geervliet. Henry also gave Holland the Grote Waard (Dordrecht and its surroundings), at the cost of the bishopric of Utrecht. He also set aside the Salic law for the succession to the County of Holland, which meant that it could be inherited by a female heir.
