The ''Archiv für Diplomatik, Schriftgeschichte, Siegel- und Wappenkunde'' (shortened to ''Archiv für Diplomatik'', and abbreviated as ''AfD'') is a historical journal dedicated to the Auxiliary sciences of history. The journal, founded by Edmund E. Stengel, is the successor of the '' Archiv für Urkundenforschung'', founded in 1908 by Michael Tangl and is published annually since 1955. Auxiliary Sciences Of History
Auxiliary (or ancillary) sciences of history are scholarly disciplines which help evaluate and use historical sources and are seen as auxiliary for historical research. Many of these areas of study, classification and analysis were originally developed between the 16th and 19th centuries by antiquaries, and would then have been regarded as falling under the broad heading of antiquarianism. "History" was at that time regarded as a largely literary skill. However, with the spread of the principles of empirical source-based history championed by the Göttingen school of history in the late 18th century and later by Leopold von Ranke from the mid-19th century onwards, they have been increasingly regarded as falling within the skill-set of the trained historian. Archiv Für Urkundenforschung
Archiv Produktion is a classical music record label of German origin. It originated in 1948 as a classical label for the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft (DGG), and in 1958 Archiv was established as a subsidiary of DGG, specialising in recordings of Early and Baroque music. It has since developed a particular focus on "historically informed performance" and the work of artists of the Early music revival movement of the 20th and 21st centuries. The first head of Archiv Produktion, serving in the position from 1948 to 1957, was Fred Hamel, a musicologist who set out the early Archiv Produktion releases according to 12 research periods, from Gregorian Chant to Mannheim and Vienna. Hamel's successor 1958-1968 Hans Hickmann was a professor at the University of Hamburg who focused on Bach and Handel. The next director was Andreas Holschneider (1931–2019) from 1970-1991. Michael Tangl
Michael Tangl (1864 – 1921, in Klagenfurt) was an Austrian scholar of history and diplomatics, and one of the main editors of the ''Monumenta Germaniae Historica'', for whom he published the correspondence of Saint Boniface, an edition still used by scholars and considered the definitive edition. Career Tangl was born in Wolfsberg, Carinthia, on 28 May 1864, to a family of bakers. He attended school at Saint Paul's Abbey, Lavanttal, near Wolfsberg, started at age 11; he later said that the wealth of deeds in the abbey's library became an inspiration for him. He studied history and classical philology at the University of Vienna from 1881 to 1884, and until 1887 at the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung, which prepared students for work in archives, libraries, and museums. Diplomatics
Diplomatics (in American English, and in most anglophone countries), or diplomatic (in British English), is a scholarly discipline centred on the critical analysis of documents, especially historical documents. It focuses on the conventions, protocols and formulae that have been used by document creators, and uses these to increase understanding of the processes of document creation, of information transmission, and of the relationships between the facts which the documents purport to record and reality. The discipline originally evolved as a tool for studying and determining the authenticity of the official charters and diplomas issued by royal and papal chanceries.
