The Roman Catholic Diocese of Mysore () is a suffragan Latin diocese, in the ecclesiastical province of Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bangalore, Bangalore in southern India, yet depends on the missionary Dicastery for Evangelization. Its cathedral episcopal see is St. Philomena's Church, Mysore, St. Philomena's Cathedral in the city of Mysore in Karnataka. An ecclesiastical province is one of the basic forms of jurisdiction in Christian churches, including those of both Western Christianity and Eastern Christianity, that have traditional hierarchical structures. An ecclesiastical province consists of several dioceses (or eparchies), one of them being the archdiocese (or archeparchy), headed by a metropolitan bishop or archbishop who has ecclesiastical jurisdiction over all other bishops of the province. An apostolic vicariate is a territorial jurisdiction of the Catholic Church under a titular bishop centered in missionary regions and countries where dioceses or parishes have not yet been established. The status of apostolic vicariate is often a promotion for a former apostolic prefecture, while either may have started out as a mission ''sui iuris''. It is essentially provisional, though it may last for a century or more. The hope is that the region will generate sufficient numbers of Catholics for the Church to create a diocese one day. Étienne-Louis Charbonnaux (20 March 1806 La Guerche-de-Bretagne France – 22 June 1873 Bangalore India) was a French missionary and the first vicar apostolic of Mysore, India. Early life Étienne-Louis Charbonneaux was born on 20 March 1806 in La Guerche-de-Bretagne, France. Career Priest Charbonnaux entered the seminary in the city of Angers, France. Afterwards, he was ordained a priest in the Paris Foreign Missions Society, Société des Missions Etrangères (MEP) on 5 June 1830. On 16 August of the same year, he left France for the Malabar Mission in Puducherry (city), Pondicherry, India. After a short stay in Karaikal, he was sent to Srirangapattana, capital city of the Mysore kingdom, where he ministered to a congregation of 3,500 Catholics.
