The Apollo (Glasgow)
The Apollo was a music venue at 126 Renfield Street in Glasgow city centre, Scotland. The Apollo operated from 5 September 1973 until closure on 16 June 1985 and was Glasgow's leading music venue during this period. The Apollo was a re-brand of the previous Green's Playhouse in the same building. History The Green family owned Green's Playhouse cinema at 126 Renfield Street. It was thought to be the largest cinema in Europe at the time but was in decline. Unicorn Leisure, owned by Frank Lynch and Max Langdown, leased a discothèque named Clouds in the top floor of the building. Unicorn included management of Billy Connolly in their portfolio. On hearing the Green family were considering converting the dis-repaired venue into a bingo hall or demolishing the venue for a completely new development, Unicorn applied to lease the building which they felt had potential as a music venue. The Hammersmith Apollo, currently called the Eventim Apollo for sponsorship reasons, and formerly known as the Hammersmith Odeon, is a live entertainment performance venue, originally built as a cinema called the Gaumont Palace. The Apollo Theater, also known as the Municipal Theater "Apollo", is a theater located in Ermoupolis on Syros in the Cyclades. A cultural icon of the city, it was built in 1862–1864 to the designs of the Italian architect Pietro Sampò and opened on 20 April 1864. History In Ermoupoli, during the period 1830-1860 there was a great theatrical movement. On 30 October 1861, the City Council accepted the citizens' proposals and unanimously decided to build a theatre and a theater club in the central square. The construction costs of the theater were estimated at 60,000 drachmas, but in spite of controversy, a permanent roof replaced the wooden warehouses, clubs and cafes of Ermoupoli which had sheltered players since 1828. Teatro Apolo (Madrid)
Teatro Apolo is a defunct theatre in Madrid, Spain. It was located on Calle de Alcalá, at the site which is now number 45. Previously, the site was occupied by the Convento de San Hermenegildo, which was sold off in 1836 and demolished in 1870. Theatre construction occurred between 1871 and 1873, with a design by the French architects P. Chauderlot and F. Festau. It had a capacity of 2,500 people. The theatre opened on 23 March 1873 and featured the company of actor Manuel Catalina. A comedy playhouse, it went through difficult times in its early days due to its relative distance from the then city center and the high ticket price. The Apolo and the Felipe theatres were the most important venues for the '' género chico'', a phenomenon which debuted in Madrid and featured one-act performances.
