Anthony Blake (bishop)
Anthony Blake (–1787) was an Irish prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise from 1756 to 1758 and Archbishop of Armagh from 1758 to 1787. Biography Blake was the younger of two sons of Andrew Blake of Kilvine, County Mayo. His family were one of the Tribes of Galway; notable members of his family included James "Spanish" Blake, John Blake (mayor), John Henry Blake and Sally Blake (duelist). He was a granduncle of Walter Blake Kirwan and Anthony Richard Blake. Blake returned to Ireland from France about 1731, having been educated at Saint-Omer and Louvain. Anthony Richard Blake
Anthony Richard Blake (1786–1849), was an Irish lawyer, administrator and 'backstairs Viceroy of Ireland'. Blake, the second son of Martin Blake of Holly Park, Athenry, was a member of the Tribes of Galway. A granduncle was Anthony Blake, Archbishop of Armagh. He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn, London, on 13 May 1808. He became a protégé of Charles Butler, collecting data on Irish catholic affairs for him during 1811-12, which led to Butler's recommending him to the catholic committee as press officer. In 1813 he was called to the Bar. In 1821 Blake travelled to Ireland in the cabinet of Lord Wellesley, being made Chief Remembrancer of the Exchequer of Ireland two years later (which made him the first catholic to hold the post since the reformation). There have been four baronetcies for persons with the surname Blake, one in the Baronetage of Ireland, two in the Baronetage of Great Britain and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Two of the creations are extant as of 2010. The Blake Baronetcy, of Menlo Castle, Menlough in the County of Galway, was created in the Baronetage of Ireland on 10 July 1622 for Sir Valentine Blake, 1st Baronet, Valentine Blake, Mayor of Galway in 1611 and 1630 and a member of the Irish House of Commons for County Galway (Parliament of Ireland constituency), County Galway. The Glenfiddich Food and Drink Awards were intended to recognize achievements in writing, publishing and broadcasting on the subjects of food and drink. Blake is a surname which originated from Old English. Its derivation is uncertain; it could come from "blac", a nickname for someone who had dark hair or skin, or from "blaac", a nickname for someone with pale hair or skin. Another theory, presumably in the belief it is a Welsh patronymic in origin, for which there is no evidence, was that it is a corruption of "Ap Lake", meaning "Son of Lake". Blake was the name of one of the 14 Tribes of Galway in Ireland. These Blakes were descendants of Richard Caddell, alias Blake, who was involved in the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169. As such a long present foreign name, it became known as de Bláca in Irish. The origins of the name Blake are also considered to be Old Norse, first appearing in Yorkshire, England, possibly derived from the word Blaker, referring to a village and a former municipality of Akershus county, Norway (east of Oslo).
