Anna Wengberg
Anna Emelia Elisa Wengberg (1865–1936) was a Sweden, Swedish painter specializing in portraits, who was a member of the Önningeby artists colony on the Finnish island of Åland. Her works are in the collections of the Nationalmuseum, National Museum of Fine Arts in Stockholm and the Helsingborg Museum. Biography Early life and education Born on 24 April 1865 in Ystad, Sweden, Wengberg was the daughter of Per August Wengberg and Emilia Sophia Carlheim-Gyllensköld. There in Skåne County she grew up and took her first drawing classes when she was nine years old, and later her oil painting classes under Herman Buuth. There is a drawing portrait of her father (1880) from that early period. She studied under Edvard Perséus in Stockholm (ca. 1884) and Bengt Nordenberg in Düsseldorf (in 1884-1887), as well as in Paris (winter of 1890) under various teachers of Académie Colarossi, particularly Jean André Rixens and Gustave-Claude-Etienne Courtois. Nykarleby
Nykarleby (; fi, Uusikaarlepyy) is a town and municipality of Finland. It is located in the Ostrobothnia region. The municipality is bilingual, with the majority speaking Swedish () and the minority Finnish (). The largest employers in the town are Prevex (member of KWH Group), a packaging and piping products manufacturer, Westwood, which manufactures wooden staircases, and in the village of Jeppo, KWH Mirka, a coated abrasives manufacturer. Edvard Perséus
Edvard Perséus, originally Persson (23 December 1841, in Lund – 7 October 1890, in Stockholm) was a Swedish painter and (a form of superintendent) at the Royal Court of Sweden. He specialized in historical and genre scenes. Biography He was born to a working-class family and originally worked as a commercial painter in Lund. During his apprenticeship, he decided to become an artist and took the name Perséus. His first lessons came from a local artist, . In 1861, he was able to go to Stockholm and enroll at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with Johan Christoffer Boklund. He moved to Düsseldorf in 1867, then went to Munich and worked in the studios of Karl von Piloty. While there, in 1873, he married Agnes Claesson. Björkudden ( fi, Koivuniemi) is a manor house in Östersundom, Helsinki, Finland, designed by the architect Wilhelm Linsén and built in the mid-19th century. Zachris Topelius
Zachris Topelius (, ; 14 January 181812 March 1898) was a Finnish author, poet, journalist, historian, and rector of the University of Helsinki who wrote novels related to Finnish history. Given name Zacharias is his baptismal name, and this is used on the covers of his printed works. However, "he himself most often used the abbreviation Z. or the form Zachris, even in official contexts", as explained in the National Biography of Finland. Zachris is therefore the preferred form used in recent academic literature about him. Other spellings used are Sakari and Sakarias. Önningeby Artists' Colony
The Önningeby artists' colony ( sv, Önningebykolonin) was founded in 1886 by Victor Westerholm, a Finnish landscape painter, who had a summer house in the village of Önningeby in Åland in the Baltic Sea. It attracted Finnish and Swedish artists who gathered in the summer to paint landscapes ''en plein air'' rather than in their studios. Many of the participating artists were women. In total over 30 artists participated in the colony. Background In the 1870s, European artists began to develop an interest in painting outdoors rather than in their studios. Formal approaches to landscape painting gave way to more realistic or naturalistic depictions, often reflecting the effects of changing light. Victor Westerholm
Victor Axel Westerholm (4 January 1860 Turku – 19 November 1919 Turku) was a Finnish landscape painter, especially known for founding the Önningeby artists' colony. Biography Victor Axel Westerholm was born in Turku in 1860. He was the son of Viktor Westerholm, a ship's master, and Maria Westerholm (née Andersson). As a child he spent a lot of time at the island of Nagu in the Finnish Archipelago. From 1869 to 1878 he studied at the Finnish Art Society's Drawing School in Turku, under Robert Wilhelm Ekman (1808–1873) and Thorsten Waenerberg (1846–1917); and as a young man he studied under Eugen Dücker (1841–1916) in Düsseldorf from 1878-1880. Gustave-Claude-Étienne Courtois, also known as Gustave Courtois (; 18 May 1852 in Pusey, Haute-Saône – 1923 in Neuilly-sur-Seine) was a French painter, a representative of the academic style of art. Life Courtois was born 18 May 1852 in Pusey, Haute-Saône, France to an unwed mother who was devoted to him. Early in life, Courtois revealed an interest in art and entered the École municipale de dessin in Vesoul (Franche-Comté). His drawings were shown to Jean-Léon Gérôme, and in 1869, Gérôme encouraged Courtais to enter the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Through his life, Courtois was in close friendship with fellow student Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret, together with whom he maintained a fashionable studio in Neuilly-sur-Seine from the 1880s. Académie Colarossi
The Académie Colarossi (1870–1930) was an art school in Paris founded in 1870 by the Italian model and sculptor Filippo Colarossi. It was originally located on the Île de la Cité, and it moved in 1879 to 10 rue de la Grande-Chaumière in the 6th arrondissement. The school closed in the 1930s. History A precursor art school in the same location was the Académie Suisse, founded in 1815. The former Académie Suisse location on the Île de la Cité was bought by Italian sculptor Filippo Colarossi in 1870, and in 1879 it moved to 10 rue de la Grande-Chaumière in the 6th arrondissement.
