Anholt (Isselburg)
Anholt is a former town in Kreis Borken in the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 1975, it is part of the municipality of Isselburg. Its population is 3,360 (2011). Anholt was the residence of the Lords of Anholt. It was the capital of the Principality of Salm-Salm; the princely Salm family (also titled Dukes of Hoogstraten) is still residing at Anholt Castle. Anholt borders on the Netherlands to the north and west and on the Rhineland to the south. It is the westernmost town of the region of Münster, Westphalia. Hoogstraten
Hoogstraten () is a municipality and city located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality comprises Hoogstraten, Meer, Meerle, Meersel-Dreef, Minderhout and Wortel (Meersel-Dreef includes the northernmost point in Belgium). Hoogstraten (originally ''Hoogstraeten'') has a population of over 20,000, and lies in Flanders at the northern border of Belgium within an enclave surrounded on three sides by the Netherlands. Today, about 15% percent of the population consists of Dutch people. Westphalia
Westphalia (; ; ) is a region of northwestern Germany and one of the three historic parts of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It has an area of and 7.9 million inhabitants. Münster (region)
Münster is one of the five ''Regierungsbezirke'' of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located in the north of the state, and named after the capital city of Münster. It includes the area which in medieval times was known as the Dreingau. Regierungsbezirk Münster mostly covers rural areas of Münsterland famous for their castles, e.g. Castle Nordkirchen and Castle Ahaus. The region offers more than a hundred castles, all linked up by the cycle path ''100 Schlösser Route''. Anholt Castle ( or ) is a monumental moated castle and former princely seat in the municipality of Isselburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, close to the Netherlands, Dutch border where the Münsterland meets the Lower Rhine region. Salm Family
The House of Salm was an ancient Lotharingian noble family originating from Salmchâteau in the Ardennes (present-day Belgium) and ruling Salm (state), Salm. Borken (district)
Borken is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the northwestern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany in the Münster region. Neighboring districts are Steinfurt, Coesfeld, Recklinghausen, Wesel, Cleves, Bentheim in the Lower Saxony and the Dutch provinces Gelderland and Overijssel. Principality Of Salm
The second Principality of Salm ( German: Fürstentum Salm) was a short-lived client state of Napoleonic France located in Westphalia. History The Principality of Salm was created in 1632 as a state of the Holy Roman Empire, and re-created in 1803 in order to compensate the princes of Salm-Kyrburg and Salm-Salm, who had lost their states to France in 1793–1795. Lordship Of Anholt
The Lordship of Anholt was a small state of the Holy Roman Empire. It was an imperial estate and a member of the Lower Rhenish-Westphalian Circle. Geography The state consisted only of the City of Anholt in the present-day District of Borken in the German state of North Rhine Westphalia.
