Andy LaVerne
Andy LaVerne (born December 4, 1947) is an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and educator. Education and musical career Born in New York City, LaVerne studied at Juilliard School of Music, Berklee College, and the New England Conservatory, and took private lessons from jazz pianist Bill Evans. LaVerne has worked with Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Lionel Hampton, Michael Brecker and Elvin Jones. A prolific recording artist, his projects as a leader number more than 50, including ''Intuition'', a duo with saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi (SteepleChase), and ''Epiphany'' (ClaveBop). Instruction LaVerne is a prominent jazz educator, having released a series of instructional videos, ''Guide to Modern Jazz Piano'', Vols. 1 &, 2, and ''Jazz Piano Standards'' (Homespun Tapes), featuring the Yamaha Disklavier, as well as the video, ''In Concert'' (Homespun Tapes), with guitarist John Abercrombie. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its roots are in blues, ragtime, European harmony, African rhythmic rituals, spirituals, hymns, marches, vaudeville song, and dance music. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz'' is a reference work containing an encyclopedic directory of jazz recordings on CD which were (at the time of publication) currently available in Europe or the United States. The first nine editions were compiled by Richard Cook and Brian Morton, two chroniclers of jazz resident in the United Kingdom. History The first edition was published in Britain by Penguin Books in 1992. Every subsequent two years, through 2010, a new edition was published with updated entries. Billy Hart
Billy Hart (born November 29, 1940) is an American jazz drumming, jazz drummer and educator. He is known internationally for his work with Herbie Hancock's "Mwandishi" band in the early 1970s, as well as with Shirley Horn, Stan Getz, and Quest (band), Quest, among many others. Biography Hart was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in a musical family. His paternal grandmother was a pianist who accompanied Marian Anderson. His maternal grandmother purchased his first drum kit. Hart grew up in close proximity of the Spotlite Club, where he first heard the music of Lee Morgan, Ahmad Jamal, and Miles Davis, among others. Early on in his career he performed with Otis Redding and Sam and Dave, then with Buck Hill (musician), Buck Hill. SteepleChase Records is a jazz record company and label based in Copenhagen, Denmark. SteepleChase was founded in 1972 by Nils Winther, who was a student at Copenhagen University at the time. He began recording concerts at Jazzhus Montmartre, where many American musicians performed, and was given permission by some of the artists to release the material commercially. SteepleChase became a haven for many artists who were without contracts with larger labels at the time. In 1987, the company started a subsidiary classical music label, Kontrapunkt. Mike Richmond (musician)
Mike Richmond (born February 26, 1948, in Philadelphia) is an American jazz bassist. Richmond started on guitar then picked up bass in his early teens. He attended Temple University (1965–1970), studying with Edward Arian from the Philadelphia Orchestra. After lessons with Jimmy Garrison in the early 1970s he began performing with Chico Hamilton and Arnie Lawrence, also working with Stan Getz, Jack DeJohnette, Horace Silver, Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz, Hubert Laws, Franco Ambrosetti, Dannie Richmond, Gil Evans, Art Farmer, Woody Herman, and George Gruntz. Starting in 1980, Richmond devoted time to learning the sitar, traveling to Madras, India and performing live with Ravi Shankar. He led Mingus Dynasty (replacing Mingus) from 1980 to 1985, and began teaching at New York University in 1988 (Teacher of the Year, 1991 & 1994).
